It was Middlefield who started brightest in this encounter as Reece McKeown's shot flew across the face of goal in the opening minute to signal their intent. It was McKeown again who threatened. He made a good run a minute later, but his shot went wide of the target.
The Eagles had their first chance of the match as a ball from the right was touched on by Calum Reid whose effort just missed the target. Moment laters and they had another chance to open the scoring. A great corner from Callum Birnie was headed over the crossbar by Rory Gibb.
The game was end to end and it was Middlefield's turn to put on the pressure. Good play from Marcel Helsinki set up McKeown, whose half-volley was well saved by goalkeeper Shay Edgar.
It was then Middlefield goalkeeper Lewis Mitchell who was called into action as Louis Francis’ long range shot was well saved by the keeper. However, Mitchell could do nothing to stop Francis' next effort. Another long range effort, but this time finding the net for the game’s opening goal.
Despite being a goal down, Middlefield looked for an equaliser, with chances in a four minute spell. Ali Mitchell had a long range effort saved by Edgar and the keeper was on hand again, as Helsinki's pass set up McKeown, but his effort was well blocked by the goalkeeper.
Despite their pressure, it was the Eagles that doubled their advantage a minute before the break. A bursting run from Reece Masson saw him get into the box, round the goalkeeper and finish from a narrow angle.
Just before the half-time whistle went, Middlefield nearly pulled one back. Robert Inkster’s long range free kick found McKeown, whose effort was well saved by Edgar in the Eagles goal to round off a fine half for the keeper.

Into the second half and it was Middlefield who got on the score sheet to provide themselves a lifeline. Inkster’s free kick from near the half-way line was launched into the box and was then volleyed into the net by McKeown.
The goal showed that Middlefield had not lost their sting as they looked to level the match. A good run and ball in by Dylan Pirie went across the face of goal with no takers. They continued to press for an equaliser and and Deniss Polo had an effort saved by Edgar.
Despite their efforts it was the Eagles that made the win secure with five minutes to go. Taggart’s ball into the box was well finished off by Masson for his second, and his side’s third of the match.
The Eagles nearly added a fourth to a fine performance, but Reid’s shot from outside the box could only find the post.
Both teams can be pleased with the way that they played, and both will be looking forward to an enjoyable and successful season.
