The road to Airdrie started in the North East and a typical cup tie was showcased at Portlethen Academy with Cove coming out on top winning 4-3 having had to come back twice. in what was a really frantic cup game and without criticising the referee it was a real surprise that this game ended up with 11 v 11 still on the park after some decisions which the official missed.

Cove had the 1st opportunity of the game after a great free kick came in by Conran Wilson which was headed goal wards by Cloewyn Viegas which just went inches wide. The visitors's 1st chance of the game was to result in a goal after Matthew Mitchell was brought down by Redha Nacef on his way to goal and perhaps the keeper was lucky to get away with a caution as Mitchell was storming down on goal. Craig Mackie took the penalty and placed it into the bottom left hand corner.

Westdyke had the confidence to go on and snatch another and they did just that after Ryan Spink went on a great run down the left wing before he flashed a cross into the box which was met superbly by Sean Reid who rallied the ball into the roof of the net. The community club outfit were in firm control of the game and nearly grabbed a 3rd after a good through ball was feeded into the feet of Matthew Mitchell who produced a 15 yard drive towards goal which was saved by Nacef.

From the 25th minute mark onwards Cove seemed to get back into the game and were awarded with a goal in the 37th minute after Westdyke didn't clear their lines and Ryan Sinclair was able to slot the ball past Eden Cooper. Just before the interval Cove made sure it was to be all square going into half time after Conran Wilson played a short pass into Neil Cooper who fought his way past two defenders before finding the bottom left hand corner from 20 yards.

Half Time: Cove BC 2-2 Westdyke BC

Cove were to have the first opportunity of the 2nd half after they pushed up into the Westdyke backline and Greg Pickard's goalbound effort produced a good parry away by Cooper. Neil Cooper then continued to pile the pressure onto Westdyke and managed to get the ball into his services who then cut inside before his 10 yard effort flashed over the bar.

After the hour mark the review of the game was that it was an exciting cup tie however when both teams have possession it seemed to be like pinball where a pass from A to B would be blocked by a player however they was still to be end to end chances. Westdyke then re-took the lead after Craig Mackie was brought down in the box and then took the penalty himself to get his brace finding the bottom left hand corner with his spot-kick.

Into the last 20 minutes and it was all starting to heat up and Cove managed to pull level again thanks to a great free kick from Liam Burnett from 20 yards which found the bottom right hand corner giving Cooper no chance. Would there be extra time or would a team go on and win?

The visitors then tried to get themselves back into the lead after Ryan Spink fed a great ball into the box which was met by Stuart Mearns however great reflexes by Nacef denied Westdyke to take the lead again. The final clear chance of the game resulted in the winner after a free kick came in from Aaron Nicol which in unfortunate circumstances for Westdyke it was knocked into their own net by Andrew Davidson to complete what was two comebacks for Cove.

There were plenty of outstanding performances all round for Cove today however Liam Burnett showed why he is the captain after scoring a fantastic goal and leading the team through when it mattered.

A close one for the Westdyke award however Ryan Spink pips Sean Reid and Craig Mackie, Ryan ran down the left wing all afternoon and wanted to set up attacks whenever possible.

Rob Sinclair, Cove BC coach, said "For us to come back from 2-0 down to win the game makes the victory even more sweeter, as some teams would have just put their heads down and catipulated. I have asked them to step up as they have stepped up to the A league after winning promotion last season, hopefully this kicks us on and we see performances like that every week."
