Rare ever has a team from the small village of Ochiltree in Ayrshire come this far in our national cup competition, but the big question was could Ochiltree Youth Under 15's go even further?
With most of the Lewis United players leaving Aberdeen around 7 am they would have been expected to start the Cup tie slowly however United started in whirlwind fashion when they almost scored via an Ochiltree player after less than one minute. Then with the game only three minutes old the United number 10 Swan has a goal ruled-out for offside.
United went onto dominate the first half with Ochiltree only managing the odd shot at goal which keeper Flinn in the Lewis goal dealt with comfortably.
After 20 minutes United made the dominance pay as Swan this time got his reward for hard work when he capitalised on a defensive mistake to give his side a deserved lead.
Four minutes later Swan should have scored again from probably an easier chance than the one he slotted home but he screwed his shot wide and this was repeated a minute later when this time United’s MacKenzie failed to score from an easy chance.
How United weren’t home and dry by this point was frustrating for those who had made the long trip South and this frustration grew on 27 minutes, albeit only temporarily, when Ochiltree keeper Park managed to tip a goal bound shot from United’s number 14 Ross out for a corner. However the save only delayed what was overdue and the second goal did arrive when United’s Schmid rose above the Ochiltree defence to head home from the resulting corner.
On 31 minutes the Aberdeen outfit were foiled again when Ochiltree keeper Park made a double save but three minutes later he could do nothing to stop Lawrence of United scoring his team’s third goal.
Just before the break United’s Ross saw another thundering shot fail to score with this time the crossbar saving the home team. How Lewis United weren’t five or six goals up at half-time was a mystery to everyone!
Half Time: Ochiltree Youth 0-3 Lewis United
There is no doubt that the slope at Ochiltree’s ground brings with it an advantage for those playing down it and with the home team having that benefit in the second half the game was destined to be a completely different from United’s dominant first-half.
On 50 mins Ochiltree pushed hard and as United struggled to cope the ref awarded a penalty for what appeared a trip on Ochiltree’s grant striker. Up stepped number 20 Morris who had also started to cause trouble for United and he coolly slotted home the penalty to give the home side some real hope.
Three minutes later United had another great opportunity wasted with Swan failing to hit the target when it looked easier to score. Again the away team’s frustration was increasing and this became a real burden for them when Morris scored for Ochiltree after a defensive lapse.
On the hour though United surely sealed the victory when Schmid bagged his second and United’s fourth when he squeezed in at the far post from another corner.
Ochiltree continued to press forward as they went in search for the historic result but they had to wait until there was only two minutes left for Ryan Brown to score to bring a nervy end to the tie for the away team.
The game ended with United through but they were almost made to rue the missed chances they had in the first-half by a hard working home side. Full Time: Ochiltree Youth 3-4 Lewis United
