Deveronvale secured North Region Cup glory as they came out on top with a narrow win over Westdyke CC. The task for Westdyke was shown as Deveronvale breezed through to the final - winning the semi final 8-0 while Westdyke managed to prevail with a 3-2 win. All things considered and with the sun beating down it was sure to be an exciting match.
The game was quick to give us its first chance when in the fourth minute a long kick from Westdyke goalkeeper Stephanie Hodgson was controlled by Naomi Cruckshank who took the ball into the box and shot but it was blocked by a member of the Deveronvale defence. The rebound was collected by Cruckshank but her shot was well saved by Deveronvale keeper Gail Gilmour.
A minute later a through ball from Deveronvale Woman of the Match Anna Grant to Catie Carter ended in a shot from Carter and forced Westdyke’s Hodgson to pull of a spectacular save.
In the ninth minute a great move of passing play by the whole Westdyke team ended with Kara Davidson getting a shot away but was again forced away by Gilmour.
The play began to slow down for a while as both teams battled for control until the 20th minute when Deveronvale struck gold as a run down the wing by winger Catie Carter, allowed her the time and space to cross a beautiful ball into Grant who cooly struck the ball off the post and into the net to make it 1-0 to Vale.
Only four minutes later Deveronvale looked to double their lead as a through ball from Carter met Lori Lappin whos shot was just wide of the right hand post
Then just four minutes before halftime in the 31st minute a cut back from Deveronvale’s Karolina Zarzycka to Carter opened up Grant who received the ball and shot. Her effort was brilliantly saved by the leg of Westdyke keeper Hodgeson to keep her side in it going into the break.
