Inverurie Academy came out on top against Mintlaw Academy in the North Of Scotland Cup at Balmoor Stadium winning 3-1 with Jamie Brailsford getting a double the difference between the teams, both teams did well and have definitely shown why they have served up some fantastic games together this season.

A crash out on the road on Friday evening saw a few Inverurie players with only 11 players on the park to begin with and no subs, Mintlaw had the first clear cut chance of the match after Jack Norrie found Ryan Milne however the forward couldn't direct his header on target and the ball went out for an Inverurie goal kick.

Jay Halliday had a chance for Inverurie at the other end which just gone wide, the Inverurie players had then just turned up and forced the coach into a few changes to try and change the game for Inverurie.

Mintlaw however were on top midway through the first half with Gregor Robertson playing a good ball into Ewan Bloomfield however a good shot by Bloomfield was denied by Fraser Scott in goals, Mintlaw continued to threaten in spells whilst Inverurie had the occasional attack however it was stalemate until the 25th minute.

Mintlaw used their pressure to take the lead on the 25th minute mark after a handball in the area forced referee Bob Eden to point towards the spot, up stepped Bloomfield who dispatched a fine penalty past Scott into the net to give Mintlaw a deserved opener.

Inverurie were always going to respond however and have quality players over the park in order to achieve that, four minutes later came the equaliser and it came in some style, the ball came into the box which was met by Daniel Middler whose effort was blocked by the Mintlaw defence before it was at a good enough angle, pace and height for Jamie Brailsford to beautifully execute an overhead kick into the back of the net beyond Owen Park.

Referee Bob Eden pointed to the spot once again a minute after the interval much to the annoyance of a minority of fans at the game, up stepped Jamie Brailsford, captain, leader and talisman to send the ball home into the bottom right hand corner past Park.

Inverurie kept up their incredible pressure to double their advantage on 50 minutes after a free kick was directed goalwards and Stewart Gerrie was there to pounce on the danger and guide the ball home into the net to put them 3-1 up which set Inverurie well on their way to the treble.

Mintlaw kept plugging away despite two quick Inverurie goals and had a couple of chances towards the end of the game, a 30 yard free kick from Bloomfield went over the bar with Bloomfield involved in the action once again finding Ryan Milne however a good volley by the forward went over the bar.

There had already been two penalties within the game and another spot-kick on 77 minutes was turned down by the referee before a good long range effort from Kian McCredie went over the bar and you could just tell it wasn't going to be Mintlaws day, Inverurie however battled and did enough on the day to ensure another cup was heading back to their school.

As Inverurie Academy coach Steve Milne said in his post-match assessment, playing the game at Balmoor Stadium in front of a healthy crowd of both Inverurie and Mintlaw supporters was a fitting way to end the season and both sides have been tremendous over the course of the season alongside on Friday evening.
