Westdyke CC came from a goal behind to knock Thistle Youth out of the Stonehaven Youth Trophy with a depleted squad, Thistle put on a fantastic performance, especially in the first half, and deserve lots of credit for their effort and attitude.

The visitors had to play an outfield player in goals with a makeshift line up, which showed their strength and depth. Thistle knew they had to react from a mediocre outing against Lewis United and react they did.

Thistle took the game to Westdyke in the opening exchanges of the game with a lot of attacking movement certainly giving the visitors lots of problems to deal with. Westdyke had opportunities of their own with Stewart Simpson having a good effort denied by Jamie Shingler.

The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes, a fantastic ball by Cody Booth went into a goalmouth crowded area with Westdyke not clearing their lines and there was Aiden Macrae on the spot to smash the ball into the net to guide Thistle in front. They set out with a real intensity early doors and deserved their lead.

Thistle continued to have chances after the goal however Westdyke got a wake up call after the goal and started to express themselves more which made for a fantastic spectacle. Nathan Manders had a shot which was thwarted by Sean McKenzie with Logan Duncan also having a long range shot saved by the versatile man.

Westdyke changed their tactics for the second half with captain Scott Coull playing in a more forward thinking role and Coull was definitely had a major part to play in the win, within four minutes of the restart, it was 1-1 with Coull playing a fantastic ball which was met by Matthew Pettermann who headed home a fine move with the youngster producing a fantastic header which went beyond Shingler.

The goal gave Westdyke that impetus to kick on however Thistle didn't panic after conceding and continued to have extra chances with Beeses Rai having a good ball played into Logan Duncan and the forward had a good shot on goal however McKenzie gathered with ease.

Both teams made changes in the hunt for the winner, Thistle took off a couple of players who had put in a fantastic shift for the hosts with equal game time for everyone involved which is the Thistle way whilst Westdyke also made changes who helped the visitors gain the win.

On 68 minutes, it was 2-1 with Lewis Dalgarno, who had a fantastic game in the centre of midfield finding Connor Napier who sharpened in on goal before keeping his composure to fire the ball into the far left corner past Shingler to complete an impressive comeback for Westdyke.

A fantastic advert for youth football with Westdyke doing enough in the second half to come out on top, Thistle are mid-table however they have to be applauded for their way of playing as do Westdyke with both sides playing football in a positive way.

Westdyke march on into the semi-finals with Westdyke Thistle next up in the Stonehaven Youth Trophy, Thistle still have a lot to play for this season with a top half finish the aim.

All the team - I thought Thistle played really well as a team and gave Westdyke problems.
Scott Coull - Didn't score yes however his contribution can't be undervalued, fantastic assist for the equaliser, did a brilliant job at left back, a position he won't be used to and also led the line well up front.
