A strong second half performance from Elgin City was enough for the hosts to come out on top against an organised and energetic Nairn County side at Borough Briggs on Monday evening. Elgin maintained their 100% start to the season whilst Nairn registered their second successive defeat however still lie in second.

Nairn County made five changes to the side that lost against Brora Rangers a fortnight earlier.

Both sides took the advantage to play first team players who have had a lack of game time with their respective first teams with Thomas McHale and Scott Miller given a run out for Elgin and Nairn also fielding a couple of first team squad players.

It was a wind spoiled encounter with unsurprisingly very few chances in the opening exchanges of the game, Nairn did have the ball in the net after eight minutes after a corner was met by Jack MacLean who guided home a fine header however it was disallowed by the referee.

Nairn were the better side in the opening 15 minutes of the game however Elgin didn't panic and a long ball into Moray Taylor nearly opened the scoring for the hosts however the strikers shot went wide.

County threatened again after a ball from Jack W MacLean was met by Ewen Urquhart who found Seamus McConaghy who was through on goal however a crunching challenge thwarted the Nairn striker a clear opportunity.

Urquhart made a good impression for Nairn and his ball found McConaghy who got past Liam McDade however his effort went over the top of Thomas McHale's goal.

Elgin had an early chance to break the deadlock after a ball from James McGowan found Owen Loveland who then played in Taylor who worked so hard for a goal however a good save from Fraser Wilkie denied the forward.

The hosts changed the system and it worked as City looked more dominant and had a lot more of the ball as well, take nothing away from Nairn though who still worked hard and remained a threat.

City took the lead on 68 minutes, a fantastic corner came in which was met by an unmarked David Wilson who guided home a fine header into the net beyond Fraser Wilkie to give Elgin a deserved lead.

A McConaghy free kick found Jack W MacLean who produced a fine header towards goal however it went wide. Nairn had another set-pieces after a ball from Ian Payne found MacLean which was denied by McHale.

Nairn's set pieces were a list of free kicks that took place. Elgin almost doubled their advantage after a ball by Ashley Ballam was met by Owen Loveland whose header went wide.

Scott Miller bagged himself a goal on 81 minutes after a Loveland effort was parried by Wilkie and Miller was there to tap the ball into an empty net to put the game in a more comfortable zone for Elgin.

Jake Thomson was fantastic when he came on for City and he rounded off a good night for Elgin when he made it 3-0 on 87 minutes getting on the end of a good ball before composing himself to slot the ball past Wilkie into the middle of the net.

Thomson completed the scoring after a cross wasn't dealt with and the forward struck home. Congratulations to Elgin City and commiserations to Nairn County.
