Comeback victory for Dryburgh books Scottish Cup Final spot

Dryburgh Athletic put in a wonderful performance against Murieston United to secure their place in the SWF Scottish Cup final.

Dryburgh came into this game on the back of another impressive victory over Raith Rovers in the quarter-finals whilst Murieston had defeated Bonnyrigg rose to progress to the semi-finals.

Both teams looked to attack the game and it was Murieston who looked the more likely to score in the opening stages, spurning a few half chances as the Dryburgh defence stood firm. Dryburgh had the first big chance of the game, Katie Shaw seeing her shot heading towards the bottom left corner well saved by Murieston keeper Alice Cowley.

The next big chance came from Murieston, Shannyn Masterson seeing her free kick hit the underside of the bar after an excellent header from Dryburgh defender Ellie Cook prevented the ball traveling into the top corner.

Two minutes after the restart and Murieston had a penalty and it was Aimee Boyle who stepped up and put it away to give Murieston the advantage. Three minutes later Dryburgh were level. Shaw had her volley excellently saved by Cowley, but Cowley could do nothing to stop Cook nodding in the rebound into the empty goal.

Ten minutes later and Nyla Murphy had completed the Dryburgh comeback with her wonderful low effort flying into the bottom left corner.

Dryburgh were doing well to prevent Murieston levelling the game up and minutes before the end Drysburgh had a third. Murphy again was the goal scorer and this time she used her head to guide the ball past Cowley and sealing Dryburgh’s place in the final.

Murieston’s number eight Aimee Boyle was real threat for Murieston and worked hard for her team mates. Her goal gave Murieston the lead but couldn’t prevent Dryburgh proceeding to the final.
It was a great team performance from Dryburgh but Ellie Cook was a standout performer for her side. She was a rock at the back whilst also grabbing a goal herself at the other end of the park. She put in a great shift in all areas of the park, which showed what Dryburgh's performance was all about.

Murieston’s opener was the highlight of their day as they looked to be in the ascendency. It wasn’t to be for Murieston who put in a decent display against Dryburgh, despite the result.
The scenes at the full time whistle showed what it meant to everyone connected with this young girl’s side to be in a cup final. Dryburgh brought two buses to Ravenscraig and there were tears of joy at the full time whistle from players, coaches and supporters alike. Dryburgh worked hard for the result and deserved to win on the day.
