A good performance from Ellon Academy was enough for the school to take home two trophies against a Banchory Academy side who did well in the first half however were brushed away in the second half. It was a lovely night at Davidson Park, Longside with a good crowd turning out for the match. A 14 minute hat-trick from Ruairidh Smith was the icing on the cake for Ellon.

Ellon clinched the Aberdeenshire League on Tuesday night with a win over Alford Academy and they kept the momentum going.

Banchory had the better chances in the opening exchanges of the game, Tom Findlay broke past the Ellon defence before his shot was denied by Liam Gibb in the Ellon goal from the edge of the box.

The Deeside school threatened again with a corner kick which was met by Daniel Geddes who sent his header wide of the left hand post. Banchory were enjoying some good opportunities, however were not clinical in front of goal.

Ellon took the lead after 27 minutes, a good ball came into the danger zone which was met by Connor Grant and from six yards out, Grant guided the ball into the back of the net to give Ellon the impetus heading into half time. It was a good time to get a goal with very little between the teams up to this point.

Ellon came out a stronger side for the second half and went 2-0 up just two minutes after the turnaround, Aiden Macrae went on a good run from a defensive position before playing a good ball into Connor Napier who rounded Jenson Rhodes before knocking the ball into an empty net. Napier has been playing a lot of football lately and he kept it going with a good goal.

It was 3-0 after 56 minutes and arguably the closing exchanges of the match were the best football Ellon had played all game, Connor Grant played a pass into Ryan McShea who then found Ruairidh Smith who tapped the ball home. The Ellon Meadows striker has been doing well all season and kept it up during the cup final.

The front two of Napier and Smith were causing Banchory problems and it was the two forwards that helped create Ellons fourth goal. A free kick from Napier was denied by Rhodes before the ball fell kindly to Smith who took a touch before slotting the ball home for his second goal of the match.

Smith was to complete his hat-trick before full time after stealing the ball off Rhodes before tucking the ball home to complete a good day for himself with his hat-trick and also his Ellon team-mates for putting in a good shift. The scoreline would have been a tough one to take for Banchory however they battled hard all game and they showed in periods they are a good side.
