A tight contest saw Nicolls Youth defeat Colony Colts in the U14s ADJFA League C at Denmore Park. The win means that Nicolls join Colony at the top of the league table.

Right from the get go both teams were eager to hit the ground running, but chances came thin and few due to solid defending from both sides.

The first real chance fell the way of Colony when Thomas Fraser found himself one on one with Nicolls’ keeper Luie Duncan. Fraser placed his shot low but it was saved with a fantastic reflex save. Pressure remained as the ball rebounded back to the feet of the attacker who would have put his side in front had it not been for a fantastic goal line clearance from defender Morgan Smith.

As the game continued, both teams battled hard to win the ball in the midfield. Roan Collin picked out an impressive through ball to send his Colony teammate Connor Milne surging down the wing. However, the dangerous looking attack was stopped by Vinnie Angus who put in a no-nonsense sliding tackle to regain possession at a crucial moment.

The first half continued to be an even contest with both teams having a fair share of opportunities. Brandon Low created a brilliant chance for Colony, picking the ball up in the midfield and slipping through the Nicolls defence. As he entered the box he let off a powerful strike to which Duncan was down quick to push it round the post.

At the half-time whistle, neither team had looked dominant in what was a very well matched first half. Colony had the marginally better of the chances but Nicolls had been just as impressive in their play.

Only minutes into the second-half, Nicolls found themselves in the lead. A flick on from Collin came to the feet of Nic Critchard who hit the ball low across goal and into the bottom corner where the keeper could not reach.

Nicolls began to take the edge in the contest after the goal. Collin played a great ball over the top of the Colony defence for Critchard to run on to. However, the Colony keeper showed quick reactions to come out and collect the ball, stopping any danger.

Another good chance fell the way of Nicolls, this time from a free kick on the edge of the opposition box. Milne played in a probing pass to Kieron Wood who flicked it towards goal but had his shot collected by the goalkeeper.

In the dying moments of the match it seemed like Colony were going to come away with a point. Collecting the ball on the edge of the box, Hamish Liddell took a powerful shot which was saved by Duncan, ensuring his side the victory.

It was a game that could have gone either way as solid defensive performances kept chances to a minimum. Thanks to a slightly stronger performance in the second-half, Nicolls came away with all three points.
