Newmachar United and FDS 2003 went head to head at the Charles Gordon Park for a fixture in the Aberdeen and District Juvenile Football Association under 15s League B. Both sides were keen to get a win and push themselves further up the table. Newmachar were looking to return to winning ways whilst FDS were trying to build upon their win last time out.

Despite the effect that the extreme rain and wind had on the park the game went ahead, with Newmachar coming away with a deserved victory despite the difficult conditions.

As the game kicked off, both teams looked slow to start, with the heavy conditions on the pitch often meaning that long balls were the only option. FDS were the first to grab a chance as forward Michael Herrera found himself one on one with Newmachar keeper Aidan Wood. His shot was placed low with good power but went narrowly wide of the post.

Herrera came close again minutes later when he dispossessed Newmachar defender Aaron Angus in his own box. Looking for an opportunity to release the ball Herrera dribbled further into the box, only to have the ball snatched away from his feet by Wood.

Newmachar also had chances early on. FDS defender Adam Mitchell’s backwards header was picked up by Newmachar forward Luke Rodger who raced in towards goal before having his shot tipped over the bar by keeper Cai Shepherd.

It was Newmachar who found themselves taking the lead around midway through the first half. Finding himself in plenty of space on the right wing, John Milne whipped a high ball into the box which dropped over the head of Shepard and into the net to open the scoring.

Five minutes later, Newmachar doubled their lead when Calum Donald burst through the defence with only the keeper to beat. Taking the ball round Shepard, he calmly finished the chance low into the empty net.

As the half continued, it was Newmachar who continued to put pressure upon their opposition. A free kick from around the half way line was put into the box by Struan Sinclair. It was controlled by Milne who lashed the ball into the back of the net, only for it to be disallowed for offside.

Minutes before the half time whistle was blown, Newmachar managed to go three ahead. A long goal kick from Wood went straight to Donald who was pulled down just outside the box by FDS defender Mitchell. Nathan Miller scored an excellent goal from the resulting free kick, placing the ball hard and low to the bottom right where the unsighted keeper had no chance of reaching.

As both teams left the pitch for half time Newmachar looked the stronger side but FDS had created enough chances to prove that they could still get something out of the game.

Just as the weather had not let up for the start of the second half, neither had Newmachar who put themselves even further ahead. Played through by Milne, Donald once again found himself one on one with Shepard who nearly got a touch on the ball but could not stop the Newmachar forward from scoring into an open goal.

Even though they were four goals behind, FDS remained resilient and it paid off as they managed to pull one back. A dangerous ball in from Christopher Brander on the right wing went right across the face of goal. Newmachar’s Daniel Owen attempted to clear the teasing cross but it deflected off of FDS substitute Ross MacMillan and into the back of the net.

If FDS were going to make a comeback they were going to have to stay defensively tight for the rest of the game. As Newmachar forward Dillan Griffin surged into the box, a fantastic sliding tackle from Mitchell got the ball away and ensured that there was still life in the game for FDS.

However, the away team’s hopes were quelled once and for all as Newmachar made it five with a goal of real quality. A fantastic ball over the top of the FDS defence allowed Owen to burst down the right hand side and pick out an inch perfect pass to Milne who finished off the delightful footballing move by tapping the ball low into the net.

FDS still remained determined and continued to fight for every ball. With only minutes to go before full time, they managed to grab a late goal. Finlay Mathieson picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fired a powerful shot high up to the keeper’s right where he had little chance of saving it. It was too little too late for FDS however as the referee blew the whistle to signal full time.

Despite a difficult playing surface due to adverse weather conditions, both teams managed an exciting game. Newmachar were fully deserved of their win, with their attack looking particularly lethal throughout the game, but FDS showed real team spirit in refusing to give in right up until the game had concluded.

The result sees Newmachar push up into second place in the league and return to winning ways, whilst FDS remain in seventh. Well done to winners Newmachar and many thanks to both teams for putting in a spirited performance.
