Middlefield Wasps won the ADJFA Under 17’s B League after a close contest with the Banchory Boys Eagles who they beat by three points. Here we speak to the team president, Mark McCready, to find out more about their success and how they got on throughout the season.
A feeling that any league winner can identify with is the utter joy that everyone who is involved with the team experiences – from the players and coaches to the parents who spend much of their weekends driving to and from matches – there is happiness all round and tremendous satisfaction after working hard all season. And this is exactly what McCready tells us about his team’s win: “We are absolutely over the moon with the league win. No one had us in contention for title so to win it feels amazing.”.
Not only is winning their league an immense achievement but the Middlefield Wasps have the added satisfaction that they surpassed all expectations of them and came out on top. Their league win came after a season of highs and lows. McCready tells us of a difficult away game in which they were beat 4-1. Finishing top of the league must have seemed very far away. Although demoralised at this point, the boys never gave up and were described as “unplayable” by McCready, as they put their everything into playing another match away from home. This away game, however, was completely different from the previous one and it was in this match that the team knew they would win the league.
So how did the Middlefield Wasps do it? According to McCready, determination and hard work was key. The team also had the extra motivator that they were not expected by any other teams to come out on top, as McCready describes the reasons behind the team’s success: “I would say the determination to prove other teams wrong for not putting us in contention of the league”.
The effort the team put in throughout the season was another reason why the team were so strong and able to go on and win the league: “My boys worked so hard at training and got what they deserved”. This season’s success for the team can be attributed to their several coaches as well as to the boys themselves. Although McCready is not continuing to coach the team next season because of family commitments, the future of the Middlefield Wasps is looking bright.
Congratulations to the team and good luck next season!
