It was a warm sunny evening at Borough Briggs with Elgin City taking on Hearts Colts in the second round of the Irn Bru cup.
Elgin had made a flying start to their campaign in League 2 winning the opening two fixtures against Cowdenbeath and Edinburgh City respectively. Hearts picked up a great victory in the last round away to Stirling Albion so a great tie was in prospect.
City manager Jim Weir made four changes from Saturdays victory over Edinburgh City. In came Chris Dodd, Kyle McLeod, Jamie Reid and Jamie Duff for Thomas Reilly, Chris McLeish, Craig Gunn and Daniel Moore.
Hearts head coach Jon Daly made one change from their victory in the last round over Stirling Albion with Rory Currie coming in for Alex Petkov. Dario Zanatta was on the bench for Hearts first team away to Aberdeen on Saturday which resulted in a goalless draw, he started for the Tynecastle outfit out on the wing.
It was a fairly tepid start to the game for both sides and neither team got a foothold of the game. Then two quick chances from the hosts set the game alight with Chris Todd’s delivery which found Shane Sutherland before being blocked by Daniel Baur the pick of the chances.
Hearts played some really good football however it was the hosts who found a cutting edge. In the 32nd minute, Kelby Mason in the Hearts delivered a wonderful save to deny Jamie Duff.
The deadlock was then broken a minute later after Kyle McLeod nodded the ball down into the pathway of Shane Sutherland who then found his way past the Hearts backline and slotted the ball with ease past Mason.
Kelby Mason then made sure going into the interval there would only be a one goal deficit between the sides after Archie McPhee delivered a great corner which found forward McLeod and he forced a good save from Mason in the Hearts goal.

It was a good open game of football and the second half was to follow suit and Hearts kicked off proceedings in the new half. Elgin were to double their advantage 11 minutes into the half after a good delivery from Chris Todd found Kyle McLeod unmarked at the far post and he wonderfully guided the ball home to make life easier for Jim Weirs men.
Both sides then started to make changes and Daniel Moore made himself known when he came on as he sent a good ball into McLeod however he sent his effort over the top.
The visitors knew they had to get themselves on the score sheet to have any chance of rescuing the tie and some good football ended up with the ball coming to Alistair Roy however his tame effort went straight at Cammy McKay.
Elgin were passing the ball about slowly and swiftly towards the end of the game and you would never have thought the game was approaching full time with Hearts showing very little attacking intent in an attempt to rescue the tie.
One last chance came from the visitors in the shape of Harry Paton however his goalbound effort was blocked on the goal line from an Elgin defender with goalkeeper Cameron McKay beaten.
A deserved victory for Elgin City and they now march on. Hearts join Aberdeen and Motherwell Under 20s in the exit door in the Irn Bru Cup.
