Written by  Formartine United

Fixture: Stonehaven YFC v Formartine United U16
Competition: Aberdeenshire & District YFL C League
Venue: Stonehaven
Date: Saturday 7th November 2015

Formartine United made the trip to Stonehaven to face Stonehaven YFC on league duty, looking to move ahead of Colony Colts into second place in the table. On a very damp and heavy pitch, Stonehaven started far the brighter of the two teams and put Formartine under pressure right from the kick-off. The defence of Arron Davison, Jardyn Beedie, Scott Elphinstone and Bran Chance soaked up this early pressure, and only a couple of long balls over the top got beyond the back 4, but our keeper James Douglas rushed off his line to block shots or clear the ball.

After dealing well with the early pressure from the home side, Formartine were beginning to get a foothold in the game, but then a serious injury to Jordan Stuart brought the game to a halt. After a long delay, Jordan was taken to hospital with a broken collar bone. We all wish Jordan a very speedy recovery. The game resumed with Joel Morrison taking Jordan’s place up front.

Following the restart, Formartine continued to press with a number of chances falling to our forwards, and our midfielders were shooting from range, but to no avail. The visitors were limiting Stonehaven to the odd counter attack now and again, which were again easily dealt with by our defence.

The first half continued in this vein with attack after attack through the middle and up both wings. As the first half progressed, Formartine started to play some fantastic one touch football with multiple chances falling to Joel Morrison, Braden Robson, Dylan Allan, James Atkin, Jamie MacIver and Aaron MacKenzie who all narrowly missed or had shots saved by the Stonehaven keeper.

Formartine were made to pay for their missed chances as against the run of play, Stonehaven’s broke the deadlock. Their left winger took advantage of a long clearance to run in behind our defence, and his cross was met by a the Stonehaven striker, and his mishit attempt at goal spun away from the despairing dive of the Formartine keeper, and was tapped in at the back post by their other striker who followed the ball in well despite the best efforts of Bran Chance to block the shot.

Half Time: Stonehaven YFC 1-0 Formartine United

Despite the setback, Formartine did not let their heads go down and started the second half brightly. Within a couple of minutes the visitors were back on level terms. Bran Chance won the ball well in defence before bombing forward, playing the ball inside for James Atkin. He played a neat one-two with Aaron MacKenzie before spreading the play wide to Dylan Allan. He then skipped past an on rushing defender and sent a venomous shot high over the Stonehaven keeper into the top left corner of their goals from 25 yards. 1-1 now!

Formartine continued to press and it was midway through the second half when they took a deserved lead. After initially being dispossessed on the edge of Stonehaven’s 18 yard box, Braden Robson chased the player back and managed to nip the ball off his toes on the half way line before passing back to Arron Davison. Davidson used some great individual skill to glide past two midfielders, squared the ball to James Atkin, who dinked a delightful ball through the middle for Jamie MacIver to send a side footed shot into the back of the net to put Formartine in front for the first time in the match.

Formartine’s strength in depth was evident when we were able to substitute Bran Chance, Jamie MacIver and Joel Morrison for Mati Kubiak, Adam Smith and Steven Ord in the second half. The fresh legs meant we could keep the momentum going and continue to create chances. The game was wrapped up with 10 minutes to go when Dylan Allan scored his second goal of the day. He cut in from the left hand side after good play from Adam Smith, Aaron MacKenzie and James Atkin, and sent a superbly placed low shot into Stonehaven’s net, giving the keeper no chance and rounding off the scoring.
