It's desmond as Formartine United lock horns with Colony Colts

Written by  Formartine United

Fixture: Formartine United v Colony Colts U16
Competition: Aberdeenshire & District JFL C League
Venue: Old Meldrum
Date: Saturday 31st October 2015

For the second time in as many weeks Formartine’s opposition was Colony Colts, who are sitting one place above us in the league. The previous encounter ended in a 4-1 win for Colony, and a win for Formartine in this game would see them regaining second spot in the table despite having played two games more than Colony.

Colony kicked off down the hill, but Formartine were much the sharper team in opening spell, strong tackling in both defence and midfield allowed Formartine to set up attacks down both wings with Dylan Allan and Jamie McIver in particular proving effective down the left whilst Adam O’Hagan, Braden Robson and Aaron Davison snuffed out Colony’s attacking threat down their own left flank, which caused Formartine many problems in the previous game.

Formartine’s bright start to the match had seen half chances fall to Jamie MacIver, Adam O’Hagan and Braden Robson, but none of these were converted and was the away side that managed to get themselves in front against the run of play. A diagonal through ball split the Formartine defence and Colony's right winger lobbed the on rushing goalkeeper Jack Ritchie who had to watch the ball fly over his head into the back of the net. Colony had managed to take the lead with their first real attack of the match.

With thier tails up, Colony managed to carve out a few more chances in quick succession, and with an almost identical through ball sent the striker through on goal, looking to double his tally. However this time Jack Ritchie managed to narrow the angle and deflect the ball wide of goal.

Following the period of intense pressure from Colony, Formartine started to come back into the game and hard work closing down players and committed tackling seen the home side winning more and more of the ball. Formartine kept the ball very well and were spreading the ball well to try and create chances. A sustained period of possession eventually lead to the equaliser for Formartine when an Aaron Davison corner was met by Dylan Allan as he rose to bullet a header into the Colony goal.

However the parity was only to last a few minutes as Colony restored their lead on the half hour mark.  Yet again a set piece was to be the undoing for Formartine as corner from the left was met by an unmarked player on the 6 yard line and he headed the ball into the Formartine net from close range.
Just before the half time whistle was blown, Dylan Allan sent a 30 yard cracker inches over the bar that could sent the teams in level at the break.

Half Time: Formartine United 1-2 Colony Colts

With the advantage of the slope in the second half, Formartine once again were looking the far more likely team to score. Good play by Aaron McKenzie in midfield and Dylan Allan on the left wing seen a number of diagonal balls being played through the Colony defence to Braden Robson on the right wing. A number of times in the opening stages of the second half Robson tested the Colony keeper who to his credit produced a couple of superb stops to keep his side infront.

Formartine did eventually equalise midway through the second half when a piece of individual brilliance from Aaron McKenzie seen him bring the ball down, turn past his marker and send an unstoppable shot high into the corner of the Colony goal from 25 yards.

Formartine continued to press for the winner, and another effort from substitutes Tyler Christie, Adam Smith and Joel Morrison used a combination of strength and skill to win the ball from the Colony defenders but Joel’s resulting shot flew wide of the Colony goal.

Both sides had a couple of chances to win the game in the last 5 minutes, but neither could capitalise on these as the games finished a desmond. 2-2.
