Colony Colts leapfrog Formartine after win in tight contest

Written by  Formartine United

Fixture: Colony Colts v Formartine United U16s
Competition: Aberdeenshire & District JFL U16s C League
Venue: Davidson Park
Date: Saturday 10th October 2015

For the second week running, Formartine were up against another team who have only lost once in the league so far this season, this time facing Colony Colts.

This match started with both teams seeming to play very cautiously for some reason, and gradually Colony took control and were looking dangerous especially down the flanks. This gave them the first opportunity of the match on the 15 minute mark, but their forward dragged his shot wide much to the relief of the Formartine defenders.

Formartine withstood the early pressure and created a couple of opportunities of their own from counter attacking quickly. Then in the 21st minute, a move down the left involving Aaron D, Tyler and Joel put Jamie clear on goal. He was forced wider then he would of liked, but he got to the byline and his cross was well met by Aaron Mck for the opener. 1-0 Formartine.

As anticipated Colony came back strong and after some constanty pressure they equalised from the penalty spot after Tyler was adjudged by the referee of have fouled his opponent in the box. Colony's striker coverted the spot kick to level the scores.

The last 10 minutes of the first half were fairly even with little goalscoring opportunities being created, and so the teams went into the break all square.

Half Time: Colony Colts 1-1 Formartine United

From the restart Colony showed more urgency from the kick off and had a couple of early shots at goal that were easily dealt with by the Formartine keeper.

Again Formartine were restricted to counter attacking and from one of these Jamie seen the Colony keeper off of his line and attempted to lob him but the keeper recovered to make a good save to keep the scores level.

Colony did however take the lead when one of their midfield players was allowed to dribble his way through 5 or 6 really non existant tackles, and drive his shot well into the corner out of the keepers reach in the 51st minute. 2-1 to the home side.

This spurred Formartine on but Colony were standing firm and resilient but they seemed to struggle with defending set pieces and three consecutive corners from the visitors ended up giving Formartine the equaliser. The third corner fell to James A and he bundled the ball over the line from close range in the 64th minute much to the delight of the Formartine team.

For the next 5 minutes the two teams stood toe to toe with every challenge, but Formartine were adjudged to have been unfair in one of them, and from the resulting free kick some 25 yards out the Colony player fired the ball into the back of the net to restore the home sides' goal advantage.

In an almost identical position to the free kick that Colony scored their third goal from, the home side scored their fourth of the game. The Colony forward nipped in round the back of the wall, unmarked, to tap home the chipped free kick.

Formartine struggled to lift themselves for the last ten minutes and in fact the game became scrappy with both teams having a couple of players cautioned for silly niggling tackles and the game fizzled out and Colony secured the win to lift themselves above Formartine in the league.

MOM was jointly Aaron Davison for his sterling efforts in defence and hard work going forward & James Atkin for his tireless work in midfield.

Full Time: Colony Colts 4-2 Formartine United
