SPFL Development League fixtures announced

Written by

The SPFL Development league fixtures for the upcoming 2015/16 league season were announced last Tuesday, with 34 rounds of matches promising a great season.

Reigning champions Aberdeen will kick off their campaign at home to St Mirren on the 4th of August, whereas last season's runners up, Celtic, will open their campaign with a trip to Edinburgh to face Hibernian in a must-see clash. There will not be long to wait for a Dundee derby this year as United take the short trip to Dens Park to play their rivals on the opening day of the season. Another standout opening tie will see last season's fourth-placed team Rangers play host to Heart of Midlothian, who endured a disappointing campaign last year, finishing 15th. Last season's bottom side, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, face a tough start as they go through to Lanarkshire to compete against last season's 3rd-placed outfit, Hamilton Accies.

The first Glasgow derby of the season will pit Partick Thistle against Celtic on the 18th of August, with the Caley Jags as the hosts. That same day will see another rival clash as champions Aberdeen welcome Dundee United in the New Firm derby.

Last season's leakiest defense, Caley Thistle, will then travel the short distance to last season's second-bottom outfit, Ross County, in the Highland derby the following match-day on the 1st of September, with the return fixture on the 5th of January.

The first eagerly anticipated Old Firm derby will take place on the 6th of October, as The Bhoys cross the divide to play Rangers, then meeting again on the 2nd of February.

The opening Edinburgh derby of the 2015/16 campaign will commence on the 10th of October with the Hibees hosting, and they will travel away to the Jam Tarts on the 15th of March.

Champions Aberdeen will finish 2015 with a home tie against Motherwell on the 21st of December.

Rangers will kick off the new year in an away tie at Hamilton on the 5th January, as two of last season's top four face off. Also that day will see Dundee United host 2016's first New Firm derby at home to Aberdeen, whilst the two teams finishing directly below the Dons, Hamilton and Celtic, will meet in Glasgow.

Last year's runners up, Celtic, will hope to go one better on the final day of the season, as they host another team in green and white, Hibernian, on the 26th of April, at the same time that Aberdeen will do all they can to retain their trophy away to St Mirren. Another eye-catching fixture on that day sees Hearts close their season at home to Rangers, in a repeat of their opening day clash. Dundee United's season will end just as it began, in Dundee, but on this occasion playing host to their city rivals.
