Cove BC and Kemnay share the spoils in a thrilling encounter

Written by

Fixture: Cove Boys Club v Kemnay FC 97
Competition: SoccerWorld League B
Venue: Portlethen Academy
Date: Saturday 14th March 2015

Each side had to come from behind in a game that would have excited a neutral spectator.

Kemnay started quicker in the match and on ten minutes the Cove goalkeeper had to make the opening save from a header.

Kemnay almost gifted Cove’s James Bartlett a goal but the visiting keeper James Duncan managed to block his shot.

Cove began to grow into the game and with the wind behind them, started to dominate play and it was no surprise that they took the lead after 18 minutes.

A high ball into the Kemnay half was misjudged by a defender, bouncing over his head and into the path of Cove’s Bartlett who calmly lobbed the keeper to score open the scoring.

Kemnay almost equalised but Keston Frontin was forced wide and his shot narrowly flew past the post.

Somewhat fortuitously, Kemnay equalised just before half time. Under pressure, the Cove keeper punched the ball high in the air and just before it hit the ground, Iain Kelly managed to head the ball low into the net off the left hand post.

Half Time: Cove BC 1-1 Kemnay FC 97

Much like the first half, Kemnay started the stronger and within a couple of minutes, they were ahead for the first time after a well worked move. A neat headed lay-off from Frontin was chipped by Adam Bunton over the Cove defence and Fraser Cheyne was able to control the ball and pass it low into the right hand corner.

Kemnay continued to dominate play but Cove came close in the 50th minute with a low shot just past the left hand post.

A few minutes later, Bartlett fired a long-range shot off the bar in an attempt to bring his side level.

Cove further applied the pressure when a fierce corner was whipped in from the right but missed by everyone and Kemnay were lucky to escape.

With little over 15 minutes to play, Cove found the breakthrough thanks to Robbie Troup. His shot from the 18 yard line flew into the right hand corner after some good build-up play on the left.

Kemnay inflicted a late surge of pressure onto the home side but couldn't find another opening as the game drew to a close and what would be considered a fair result for both sides.
