Fixture: Bervie Caley v Banchory Boys
Competition: Under 16's ADJFA "B" League
Date: 21/02/15
Bervie began this league match against local rivals Banchory with a number of changes to the team that won at Byron the week before; Club Captain Gordon was back after his injury however missing was long term injury McLaughlin and Anderson was out ill, Smith and McHardy named amongst the substitutes.
Bervie opted to play into the wind after their experience two weeks before where they performed better when playing into the wind. Bervie started well with neat interplay between Blacklaw and Montgomerie and were looking threatening early on, however it was the visitors who nearly got the first effort in on goal, Gordon doing well to stretch for to intercept a through ball however his clearance was intercepted and Blacklaw did well to come back and put in a challenge conceding a corner. From the corner it was Blacklaw who won the header and then was first to react to block the follow up.
It was Bervie who grabbed the first after a quick throw down the left from Sawyer was played into Collie who fed Morris on the left, he did well to find his way into the box and finish neatly to the keepers left to give Bervie the lead. The lead was short lived though, Salmond did well to block a cross conceding a corner on Bervie’s right, the ball was whipped in dangerously with the wind bending it in Leisk doing well to punch the ball over the bar, however the second corner was a repeat and eluded everyone to level the game.
Undeterred Bervie were positive from kick off, Salmond switching the ball to Sawyer on the left who fed Blacklaw his pull back found Webster whose effort was saved. After Sawyer was fouled Bervie flighted a free kick in and the keeper doing well to save Collie’s effort with Blacklaw on hand to follow up however he was flagged offside.
Bervie were dominating the match now and Collie did well to get another effort away after strong play from Blacklaw. Despite Bervie’s dominance Leisk had to be alert when a long ball forward from Banchory saw Gordon and Leisk getting very close at the edge of the box where Leisk had to be alert to react to Gordon’s header back.
Bervie’s lead was restored when Collie swung in a corner to the back post and Blacklaw rose highest to nod home. Bervie extended their lead when Avis did well down the right to beat his man pulling the ball back for Collie who controlled and slotted home.
Shortly after Bervie had to withdraw Gordon with Smith coming on at right back, Webster moving into centre back and Salmond moving up into midfield. It was the substitute Smith who had the next half chance when a corner came across however but with his back to goal he couldn’t get turned and his effort away.
Smith had to be alert when Banchory’s right sided midfield beat Morris and went on a run across the pitch however Smith put a fine challenge in to prevent him going further.
Bervie were playing some good football typified when Davies intercepted a ball and played it back to Leisk with the keeper neatly lobbing the ball over the onrushing forward back to Davies who cleared.
Bervie lost their second player shortly after with Salmond getting a knock to the ankle, McHardy replacing him. On the stroke of half time Blacklaw had a good chance to double his tally when he found himself open on the left however his effort went high over the bar.
From kick off Bervie were immediately putting pressure on the ball and earner a corner as Banchory were forced further and further back. Montgomerie was starting to see more of the ball and showed great vision to pick Morris out on the left who earned a throw in. It was Blacklaw who went close to adding to the lead, Smith crossing and Blacklaw having a volley well saved. The keeper was having a fine game and was all that was preventing Bervie running up a big score, again blocking another Blacklaw effort.
Bervie were dominating and with confidence flowing this was demonstrated when Davies lofted the ball over to Avis in the right, with back to play he back heeled it infield on the volley to Montgomerie who controlled on his chest and played the ball out to the left for Morris.
Bervie finally got the goal their play deserved when they earned a corner and the ball was swing into the back post where Boyd guided his header into the far corner. Bervie nearly had a fifth when Blacklaw did well down the left and crossed to Collie, his effort going wide and eluding the onrushing Avis. Bervie did finally get their fifth when Blacklaw did well down the left crossing for Collie who slotted home his second.
