Donside earn victory over Paul Lawrie in testing conditions

Written by  Donside Juveniles

Fixture: Paul Lawrie Foundation v Donside Juveniles
Competition: Under 13's ADJFA "C" League
Date: 22/02/15
Despite a delayed kick off of 10:45 to accommodate the referee, the Paul Lawrie team stayed in the changing rooms and left the Donside team waiting on the pitch for Kick Off. Following the late arrival Donside got the game off and running at about 10:55.
As a team, Donside started very bright and were sharp. In particular, I thought Connor and Tom made a great impact in the middle of park working very hard both to win the ball and create opportunities for their team mates.
In the early stages Paul Lawrie battled hard to try and win the ball in a tough midfield and managed to create a couple of chances out wide to their number 10 and through the middle to their number 12 which resulted in Ben having to make a great save and hold the ball well.  As usual Ben was solid and was used by his defence as a sweeper with his kicking finding good distance.
We battled hard with Tom and Liam in midfield and we found our passing range in tight spaces.
David playing on the left looked isolated at times but when he cut inside found himself free around the box which ended with a couple of efforts on goal.  We were finding good space on the right side of the pitch and Boyd was using his long throws to good effect.
To use the space wide right more we swapped Boyd with Logan and got some instant success with Logan making a one two with Matty and keeping the ball in well at the corner flag.  He composed himself and crossed the ball into the box which eventually found Matty who cooly slotted past the helpless keeper. 0-1.
PLF fought back and created more chances for their number 10 and 12 who on the day were their better players.  They found some good space and again Ben did well to save and hold some shots.
Craig Coutts came on to replace Matty and was unlucky to have a goal bound shot saved well by the PLF keeper high to the left of his goal.
Connor showing some great skills burst from deep in our half and linked well with Tom who found himself heading to the edge of the area where he was duly fouled. Greg stepped up to take the free kick and hit a powerful effort but it was straight to the keepers hands.
Both David and Connor had shots on goal in this spell of dominance but without getting the breakthrough. We had a spell with every Donside player camped in their half and Craig, Liam, Tom, David, Connor & Greg all having efforts blocked or saved in a goalmouth scramble.
As well as this Greg was finding good space in the middle of the park and went on a couple of maizy runs one where he went out wide left skipped over the ball to beat his man took on another beat another 3 and shot off the post! The only thing missing was a goal.
Cameron & Jamie came on for Tom & Liam and duly continued to boss the midfield with Jamie bursting forward and Cameron helping with defensive duties. Greg tired and was replaced by Liam. Our defensive duo of Arran and Craig Brander played solid and covered the through balls well clearing when necessary.
We seemed to take our foot off the gas and allowed PLF to come at us in the last few minutes of the half. With it looking like we were about to concede a late goal the ball was cleared from our box out for a corner by Arran and with the last kick off the half they floated in good corner with a shot on goal that was held well by Ben.

We moved Greg into CH to provide cover in defence and playing alongside a solid Craig Brander they bossed the game from the back line. Both Boyd and Callum found more space in the second half and their link up play with the team was excellent.
PLF kicked off and we were straight at them and bossed the game from kick off. Tom, David and Connor were linking up well in the middle and were finding our wingers with ease as we stretched the game.
After some great play from Donside, Connor was played through from Tom and with him bearing down on goal lost his footing for what would have surely been a well deserved goal.  We kept going at them and we were finding space all round the box. Tom was played in well from Connor and encouraged to shoot from distance which he duly did and the keeper was unable to hold on to the powerful effort and it ended up in the net. 0-2.
A couple of corners were well delivered from Matty as we continued to create chance after chance. Boyd picked the ball up well from Logan, he crossed to the far post to find Matty but the keeper somehow kept the ball out.
Cameron & Fraser came on for Callum & Ben and PLF tried to push out with the long ball over the top. Boyd firstly clearing out for a throw in and then Greg back to Fraser for his first touch.  Fraser cleared well up to left wing and we continued to attack.
Craig Coutts and Liam came on for Jamie and David and PLF slowly came back into the game which resulted in them getting a couple of corners. Our defence held firm but for a few minutes they kept us pegged back. Cameron was doing good at left back and was linking up with Matty well. We also had a couple of great crosses and through balls into the box but we failed to take these chances.
Matty was replaced by Arran and sparked some new pace in the game with some positive play.  We were still finding a lot of space around their box and after a couple of blocked efforts from Tom and David the ball found its way to Cameron who cooly fired the ball high into the net. 0-3.
Connor came off after a great shift and was replaced by David. We were testing the keeper from distance with Tom and Craig Coutts carving out the best chances.
Fair play to PLF who kept going and carved out a couple of chances that were blocked well and resulted in a really good save from Fraser.
As in the first half, Craig Coutts found himself firing a great shot to the keepers top left and somehow he saved well round the post. As the game continued Donside were looking the stronger team and some of our passing and running was great.
Arran slotted a great ball through for Logan and put him one on one with the keeper but he was brought down on the edge of the area as he looked to shoot. A penalty was correctly awarded and up stepped Craig Coutts who on another day would have been slotting this home for a hat trick. He slammed it home, 0-4.
Shortly after this with the weather getting worse the referee suggested he end the game early. Our boys were happy to see out the last 6 minutes but PLF agreed to the referees decision and the game was finished early.
