It comes to mind that a referee (depending on the ref himself) can't always keep up with the play, for example last weekend, the centre half and the striker were racing to the ball, the striker brings down the defender, goes through on goal and scores, of course at this point the referee is still inside the other half! Which may be why he wasn't sure about calling it? Of course this decision affected the outcome of the game. So, do we assess referees on their fitness? Or let them keep making bad calls?

As a referee, I have no issues with anyone assessing my fitness. I would consider myself as being fit and capable of being up with play. However, if the ball is played long from one end of the field of play to the other it is impossible to be up with play. I am not saying that was the case here, I have sadly witnessed your scenario far too often. But please keep in mind that we are n our own.

I agree with Stevie. Is there any kind of fitness testing for the average grassroots referee nowadays? Without the upper age limit at SPL level, I presume this is going to be a vital feature of professional refereeing?

I agree with you Stevie if the ball is played from one end to the other, but when it isn't and the referee still can't keep up, then there must be a problem. But then it moves on to my next question, that there isn't enough funding in grassroots football, to pay for linesmen and other officials? This is a problem.

we do have a fitness test twice a year, for both non listed officials such as us grassroots referees and the listed officials have regular tests also. We dont have assistants to help us out, so the majority of us do the best we can and we do it fairly, we arent perfect we will make mistakes, but unless you want to start paying for assistants as well as the referee than it will continue to give some folk something to moan about. Even with assistants it gives folk even more to moan about lol

Of course we should be able to question referees fitness.

A vast majority of the referees in my area are not fit for purpose. Too old, cant keep up with play, don't move out of the center circle, blowing out their backsides after 10min, their tops being stretched to their limits by a huge belly, terrible attitudes etc etc

Referees get well paid and are the only person paid at a game and as they are getting paid I expect them to do a descent job.

There is no way some of the refs I have encountered have passed a fitness test in the last 5 years.

It is so refreshing when you do come across a ref that can do his job properly.
