Youth Football Scotland: Redhall Star YFC v Westerton United (U15s) &emdash;

Redhall Star Yfc had booked their fourth round spot on the back of winning a penalty shoot out in the last round against Galston Yfc but found themselves on the loosing end of another penalty shootout against Westerton United FC who had defeated Haddington Athletic comfortably in the previous round.

It is never easy to go out of any cup on penalties especially the biggest youth cup competition in the country but this was the only way these sides could be separated after a exhilarating game at a rather muddy Redhall Park.

Redhall got this Scottish Cup tie underway and went straight up the park and tested the Westerton keeper early doors but it was Westerton who took control in the early stages of the half playing some nice passing football.

Westerton got their noses in front seven minutes into the half when Ruairidh Sorbie headed in from close range after a cross in from the right hand side.

This game was being played at an incredible pace and it was Fraser Maclean who found himself trying to latch onto a through ball but Ryan Green cleared the danger.

Maclean again tested Green only minutes later with a fine strike from the left hand side of the box which Green saved well and put behind for a corner.

Maclean and Green were having their own personal battle and Green came out on top again when he rushed out twenty five yards to clear the ball up field to just beat Maclean to the ball.

Redhall started to find their rhythm and Nathan Robertson and Samuel Donachie combined well but Danachie saw his shot deflected for a corner. The resulting corner saw Robertson nearly getting his side on level terms but his header just went agonizingly wide of the right hand post.

Redhall did get level in the 25th minute when Donachie picked up the ball eighteen yards out and saw his low drive go in of the post.

Westerton nearly got their noses back in front when Thomas Drain tried to squeeze the ball between the upright and Green in the Redhall goal from a yard out but the ball came of the base of the post and Redhall cleared.

The pace of the game was frightening as both sets of players were 100% committed to the cause and the next goal was going to be so important.

The next goal came Westerton's way when Calum Smith fired home from close range after Sorbie's shot deflected into his path in the box to put his team back in front with 28 minutes gone. Redhall felt Smith was offside but the referee suggested he was played on by their right back.

Redhall felt hard done by and went on the attack. Robertson came close when his shot across the keeper just went wide and then Campbell tried his luck about eight yards out but did not get enough power on the ball from his header to trouble Matthew McAlpine in goal.

Green in the Rehall goal showed real quality to prevent his team going further behind when he pulled off a magnificent double save to deny Louis Black. Black drove down the right side cut inside and unleashed a super curling shot that looked destined for the far corner but Green somehow managed to get his outstretched hand to it, the ball was then played back to Black who forced Green into another superb save from close range.

Redhall won a corner which Jack Anderson floated in and with bodies in the box the Westerton keeper and defender came for the ball and knocked it out which rebounded off Redhall's Shortiss only a couple of yards out.  Shortiss did not know much about it but it counted and Redhall were all square again with only four minutes to go to half time.

Redhall Star started the second half with real intent and should have went in front two minutes into the half when Nathan Robertson found himself three yards out with a open goal only to blast his shot wide.

Redhall had Westerton at sixes and sevens when a free kick played into the box by Anderson caused pure panic in the Westerton box and after a few wild swings Westerton managed to clear the ball up field.

It was all Redhall at this stage and Westerton were struggling to cope with Redhall's relentless attacks which saw Donachie who looked dangerous every time he got on the ball for Redhall saw his goal bound shot from the edge of the box blocked.  Then Hannah combined well with Shortiss but his shot was straight at the keeper.

Westerton looked for the long ball over the top in behind Redhall and Thomas Drain benefited from this when he found himself through on goal but Green saved well with his feet.

Westerton's next chance came after Maclean played the ball into the box which was met by Redhall's Jack Anderson who headed high into the air and with the ball coming down Black tried the difficult task of the overhead kick which did not come off.

Redhall could not capitalize on their early dominance and Westerton were slowly getting back into the game. Black tested Green again when he played in a free kick which saw Redhalls keeper having to punch clear.

Westerton's next chance should have produced a goal when Drain played a great ball in from the left across the box which found Black and Maclean free at the back post but neither took the option to slide in and the ball went harmlessly out. Any contact from either player and Westerton would have most likely restored their lead.

With the game on a knife edge it was Green to Redhall's rescue again when he saved Drain's shot with his feet and good luck followed him when he David Johnstone saw his follow up shot hit the post and Westerton came close again when Black saw his long range effort just go wide of the post this time.

Campbell was next to threaten when he picked up the ball and drove along the by line but a challenge from the Westerton player saw a corner conceded. The resulting corner played long to the back post by Shortiss was begging for someone to stick their head on it but there were no takers.

Maclean showed great footwork on the edge of the Redhall box but his shot was straight at Green who took comfortably.

Redhall passed up a great opportunity to win this cup tie right at the death after Campbell played in Shortiss who blasted straight at McAlpine who saved well.
