Forfar Farmington put on an incredibly impressive display to beat Spartans FC 7-0 in the final of the East Region Under 17s League Cup final. Goals from Amy Gallacher, Jose McCabe, Beth Shillitto, Lindsey Dunbar, Nikki Grant and a double from Alex Russell ensured that Forfar left St Andrews delighted with their performance, and also with a trophy in their possession.
The crowd did not have to wait long to witness the first goal of the afternoon match. After just 2 minutes Gallacher latched onto a long ball straight from a goal kick that had evaded the Spartans defence. Gallacher’s shot was too powerful for Spartans ‘keeper Eartha Cumings, who did well to get a hand to it, but it nestled inside the net despite her best efforts.
Forfar’s early strike signaled what was to come for the rest of the game as their attack continued to create plenty of chances.
Forfar’s Bekah Brown came close to doubling the lead on 10 minutes after skillfully collecting the ball from a cross that came from the right hand side. Following a clever turn she took her shot. However, the ball hit the ground, which took the sting out of the effort, leaving Cumings to claim the ball.
In the 17th minute Nikki Grant burst through to take a shot aimed towards the right hand corner of the goal. Cumings produced a good save to parry the ball behind for a corner.
Brown had another attempt at goal 5 minutes later after running down the left wing. Again Cumings denied Forfar with another save.
Shortly afterwards Spartans had their first attempt on goal. Taylor Sanderson made a spirited run down the right before shooting across the goal aiming for the bottom left hand corner. Unfortunately for her, and Spartans, the ball drifted wide of the post.
On the 35th minute it was Lindsey Dunbar’s turn to be denied by Cumings. After a fine ball Dunbar ran in on goal before Cumings bravely dived in to feet and blocked the effort.
Just a minute later Forfar Farmington would have been scratching their heads wondering how on earth they could beat the Spartans goalkeeper, who was more than keeping her team in the game. Again Dunbar was the one to be denied. After a cross from wide into the penalty area she unleashed a strong powerful shot towards goal which seemed destined to put her team 2-0 up. However, Cumings produced an absolutely phenomenal close range save diving low to her left to push the ball away. Her impressive reactions received a round of applause from all the spectators.
