Brechin returned to leagues duties this week and suffered a narrow defeat to Montrose.
Montrose controlled the early part of the first half and took a three goal lead within the first thirty minutes. The first, after six minutes, came down the Montrose right hand side. Alexander was beaten out wide and Robertson cut in and gave the Brechin 'keeper no chance as he rifled a shot into the net.
Montrose continued to control the play and came close again a few minutes later. A long shot was tipped over the bar by Sim in the Brechin goal.
Further pressure saw Robertson scoring his second to extend the Montrose lead. A vicious volley from twenty yards was driven high in to the Brechin net leaving Sim no chance.
Five minutes later, Robertson completed his hat trick converting a long ball out from the Montrose 'keeper.
Brechin fought bravely to try and get back into the game but to no avail, with limited chances being created, although the midfield and defence worked hard to contain the Montrose attack.
Half time: Brechin 0-3 Montrose
Brechin came out fighting in the second half, driving hard at the Montrose midfield and trying to create opportunities. Irvine worked hard up front and was supported by Walker and Anderson. Thomson and Stuart in midfield fought tirelessly to try and develop opportunities.
On twenty seven minutes, Brechin were awarded a free kick on the left hand side roughly half way inside the Montrose half. Thomson flighted a superb ball into the box where it was met by Reece Campbell who back headed the ball into the top corner of the net.
Brechin were beginning to get into their stride now and pulled back a second within two minutes. Ryan Campbell gathered the ball in his own half and slipped a pass to Reece Campbell who, in turn, passed to Walker who set off on a drive upfield. A telling cross into the edge of the penalty area was met by Thomson who let fly a stunning shot which went in off the underside of the bar.
Further attacks from Brechin created chances which unfortunately could not be converted.
Full time: Brechin 2-3 Montrose
Although ending in defeat for Brechin, the whole team worked well together with a strong performance in all areas.
