Bonnybridge FC met Ardeer Thistle in the final fifth round tie across the age groups. The last quarter final place in the national youth club competition was up for grabs and at stake was a last 8 trip to East Kilbride FC Gold. The quarter final opposition in waiting were based almost exactly halfway between today's teams, as Ardeer of North Ayrshire made the journey east to visit the Forth Valley.
Both sides found themselves sitting in midtable and playing catch up, with games in hand on the teams above. Bonnybridge had the slightly better league record, with no defeats to their name and five wins from six games. Caledonian FC, Valspar, Sauchie Juniors and Glenrothes Strollers had fell to Ardeer in the previous rounds. Bonnybridge had recorded narrow wins over Quarter Athletic and Westfield Colts in the first couple of rounds. They then saw off last year's Under 17 quarter finalists Larbert Athletic on penalty kicks before recording an impressive 5-1 victory over a strong Johnstone Burgh outfit - Burgh had already knocked out reigning champions Bonnyton Thistle.
In the early stages it was hard to sense who would grab a hold of the game. Then Bonnybridge got a free-kick in a dangerous area, just outside Ardeer's box and it was Josh Taplin, who put the ball in the net.
Ardeer seemed to lose confidence and found themselves conceding again just before the break with Taplin once again on target.
Half Time: FC Bonnybridge 2-0 Ardeer Thistle
Quickly after the game resumed, Andrew Kay, made it 3-0 to Bonnybridge. This dented Ardeer's confidence and again, they conceded briefly after with Taplin converting a penalty to seal his hat-trick.
A long goal kick from the away team's goalkeeper saw it sail through to the Ardeer striker, leaving him 1 on 1 and making it 4-1.
Ardeer were then reduced to 10 men after a player was booked for the second time for a mistimed challenge. This diminished their hopes of a revival and the goals continued to come for the home side.  Garri Duncan made it 5-1 then David Ross scored the sixth. Harry Extance scored from a corner to make it 7-1 and Garri Duncan completed the scoring, making it 8-1.
Bonnybridge now look forward to a trip to South Lanarkshire to face EKFC Gold. On today's form, they'll give anyone in the competition a good game.
