It's fair to say Airdrie Boys Club and Kilsyth Athletic, of the Under 16 Cumbernauld & Kilsyth District Youth League, will be seeing a lot of each other in the coming weeks. The two leading sides face each other in no less than four cup finals and a league decider.

The first of the four meetings took place on a Friday evening at Cumbernauld United's Guy Meadow Park. It was a chance for one of the teams to net the season's first trophy at the age group and boost confidence ahead of the series of matches.

Airdrie started the match brightly with the right winger sending over a cross onto the striker's head - but the header was straight into the arms of Kilsyth's goalkeeper.

The second effort at goal also came from Airdrie, whose midfielder hit a shot from range, forcing the Kilsyth goalkeeper to push over the bar.

In the closing minutes of the half Airdrie went close again, hitting the woodwork, bringing to a close a deadlocked forty minutes of football.

From the first whistle of the second half, Kilsyth looked a bigger threat. This came to fruition when five minutes after the break a corner was cleared to the edge of the box and Ciaran Crainey drove a low effort throug a crowd of bodies and into the bottom corner.

Airdrie pressed for an equaliser with pacy wingers on either side looking dangerous, but Kilsyth defended strongly and kept their lead and clean sheet intact.

Kilsyth continued to look threatening from set pieces and another corner kick lead to their second goal. Michael Duncan's header across the goal clipped the bar and went in, to the joy of the players in green.

Inevitably Airdrie enjoyed the better of the late exchanges, as they threw everything they had at Kilsyth. However, more accomplished defending saw Athletic over the finishing line and gave them first blood in the encounters between the two rivals.
