Competition: League Cup - Round 1

Venue: Scott Ellis Playing Fields

Kingswell kicked off the game wearing their new orange kits against Kilmarnock Portland in yellow and blue kits.

Kingswell forced the first half chance of the game.  A long throw from the right wing was not cleared by the Portland defence which allowed Ben O’Donnell to get a shot away which finished just wide.  In response, Portland forced a similar chance of their own – a throw in was not cleared by the Kingswell defence giving Aydan Anderson an opportunity to poke the ball just wide.

Kingswell tried to take control of the game midway through the first half.  Kieran McCourt played a lovely cross field pass to release Connor Fitzsimmons on the right wing.  Fitzsimmons got to the by-line and crossed the ball in towards Rory McAughtrie, who was unmarked at the back post.  The striker volleyed wide when he should have scored.

Kilmarnock Portland were able to win themselves a corner.  The corner came to nothing but Kingswell went on the counter.  Daryl Biggley drove his team forwards and played Colin Martin in on the edge of the six yard box.  Martin had his shot smothered by James Hosie and the rebound was then cleared off the line and the danger cleared.

Kingswell continued to attack and won themselves a free kick around 30 yards out.  Millar Paisley crossed the ball in and it was not cleared well by Portland’s defence.  The ball fell to Ben O’Donnell who finished well on the volley to put Kingswell into the lead.

Portland responded well and tried to get an equaliser before half time.  A throw in from the left wing ran across the edge of the area where Aydan Anderson took a powerful shot on the turn which was well saved by Martin McDonald in the Kingswell goal.  Portland continued to press and a long ball from defence released Aydan Anderson who had another shot saved from Kingswell’s keeper.

At half time, Kingswell deserved their lead as they created the more clear cut opportunities than Portland did.  Portland, though, came more into the game as the half neared its end and could have easily equalised if their finishing was better.
Half Time:  Kilmarnock Portland 0 – 1 Kingswell
Portland kicked off the second half and straight away found themselves on the back foot.  Kingswell’s Rory McAughtrie had a shot saved from 25 yards out which went for a corner.  Connor Fitzsimmons also had a volley which went over.

Kingswell’s early pressure paid off as they doubled their lead.  Connor Fitzsimmons played Ben O’Donnell in on the left wing.  O’Donnell got to the by-line and played a cross in low and hard across the six yard box to Colin Martin who tapped in at the back post.

From the resulting kick off, Portland went on the attack and got themselves back into the game immediately.  Aaron Clancy was able to square the ball to Aydan Anderson who was on the penalty spot.  Anderson took a touch, turned and finished well passed Martin McDonald.

After losing the goal Kingswell were able to create a good chance for Connor Fitzsimmons.  Daryl Biggley got himself to the by-line and Portland players stopped playing thinking the ball had went out.  Biggley played on and cut the ball back to the on-rushing Fitzsimmons whose shot was blocked before it reached the Portland’s goal.

The rest of the game fizzled out with not many chances being created for either team.

At full time, Kingswell probably just deserved their win.  They made more clear cut chances than Portland did throughout the whole game and should have scored more goals than they actually did.  Portland started slowly but came more into the game more as the match progressed and probably will feel hard done by with not at least getting a draw.
