A single goal just after half time was enough for Tayport Thistle to progress into the second round of the Under 16s Scottish Cup against Bayside.

Both teams in the early stages were trying their best to get the ball out wide and pass their way forward on what was a slippery pitch due to some early morning rain.

Tayport created the first real opportunity of the match on 11 minutes. The ball was knocked about the penalty box until it eventually found its way to the right side for Alastair Manning but his shot went straight into the arms of Riccardo Busby’s arms.

Bayside won the first corner of the game and were looking to take the lead but as the ball was crossed in Tayport goalkeeper Grant Cavin managed to push the ball clear.

Tayport were beginning to have more of the possession and on 25 minutes Dylan Sorrie, who was doing well on the left wing, picked up the ball and cut inside but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

As the pressure was building, soon after Sorrie’s chance Tayport’s Jamie Todd found space in the box and his shot looped over the keeper but unfortunately for him also went over the bar.

With two minutes of the half remaining the home side almost stole the lead. Bayside won a free kick just outside of the box but James Galloway saw his right foot shot sail over the crossbar.

As halftime loomed, Tayport won a late corner and although the ball was headed clear David Gray collected the ball and hit a good shot that Busby pushed wide in the last action of the half.

Half Time: Bayside FC Under 16s 0-0 Tayport Thistle Under 16s

It took just three minutes into the second half for the game’s opening goal to arrive and it was the visitors who got it. From a corner on the right, Sorrie played it short to Daniel Duthie who swung the ball into the box and Tom Whyte was there to head the ball into the net.

Bayside went searching for an equaliser and Galloway was trying his best to pull his side level. He found some space and tried to lob the goalkeeper from inside the box but the ball went over the bar.

The visitors were looking to give themselves a two goal cushion and Sorrie and goal scorer Whyte combined well on the left but Sorrie’s eventual shot went wide.

On 68 minutes a defensive error in the Tayport defence almost allowed Bayside’s Callum McLoughlin to score but just as he ran through and was about to hit a shot, Grant Cavin rushed out well to make a good block.

As the game neared an end Bayside were desperately searching for a late equaliser but the visitor’s defence were dealing well with any pressure that came their way.

It was looking likely that if an equaliser was to come it would come courtesy of a set piece. As the game reached 80 minutes Bayside won a free kick out on the left. Everyone was urged to get into the box. Qasim Choudhary stepped up to deliver the ball but disappointingly he went near post in an attempt to beat the goalkeeper but his effort hit the side netting.

The match had three minutes of stoppage time and although they won one last corner Bayside couldn’t sneek an equaliser and Tayport celebrated progressing into the second round.

It was a narrow but just about deserved victory for Tayport to see them progress to the next round. Bayside however will be disappointed at their early cup exit and for not taking some of their chances.
