Jake Kettles inspired Kirrie Thistle to their first every trophy as they toppled Dundee West in the final of the Dundee West Anniversary Cup. The winger netted twice and picked up two assists as Kirrie avoided what would have been a stunning Dundee West comeback.
Kirrie started on the front foot, and put their pre-match nerved to bed with only six minutes played. Logan Richardson’s shot deflected into the path of Jake Kettles, who smashed a shot past Jordan Walker at the near post.
Dundee West saw their top scorer Aiden Law denied by Rory Davidson, before Walker kept out an effort from Richardson at the other end. Cammy Blacklock tried his luck from 20 yards but was denied by Davidson.
Kirrie extended their lead after 19 minutes through Cameron Simpson. Dundee West could only clear a corner as far as the defender, who looped a header over Walker and into the net.
Sam Ellis went close to extending Kirrie’s lead five minutes later but couldn’t hit the target with a curling effort from the edge of the box. Dundee West were starting to grow into the tie and saw Law fire wide from 20 yards after 26 minutes.
As half time approached, Patrick Todd latched onto a long free kick, but couldn’t turn the ball into a dangerous area. Law was presented with his side’s best chance of the half seconds later, but Davidson was quick off his line and smothered the shot.
