Grove Academy found the net 12 times as they demolished Craigie HS in the final of the Dundee United Cup. A hat trick from Fraser MacLeod, a brace from Finlay Baird and goals from Lewis Stracey, Ewan Faulkner, Ryan Hunt, Luke Benvie, Brandon Black, Callan Gallacher and Chris Mudie saw Grove cruise to victory at Whitton Park.

It took Grove just 83 seconds to open the scoring. Callan Gallacher’s corner was fumbled by Craigie keeper Ian Wylie, which allowed Fraser MacLeod to stab the ball in from close range. Craigie were already underdogs, and the early set back didn’t help their hopes of causing an upset.

With 10 minutes gone, Grove doubled their lead. MacLeod turned provider as he cut the ball back for Finlay Baird, who guided the ball past Wylie into the bottom corner.

Grove were in complete control, and nearly added a third when Ryan Hunt fired over after 14 minutes. They wouldn’t have to wait long for a third, as Lewis Stracey got in on the act after 16 minutes. The left back’s surging run looked to have been brought to an end when he was kicked on the edge of the area, but rather than stop and take the free kick, he powered on and blasted the ball past Wylie.

Stracey nearly doubled his tally after 28 minutes, but his in-swinging cross came back off the cross bar. Wylie did well to keep out Baird’s half volley from the top of the box before making a smart save with his feet to deny Hunt after half an hour.

The Craigie goalkeeper was beaten moments later, but Brandon Black’s volley came back off the crossbar.

Craigie had been struggling to deal with Grove’s corners, and it was a set piece that brought about their fourth of the match. Stracey’s cross was flicked home by MacLeod after 34 minutes.

Two minutes later, Grove’s lead was five. Another Stracey corner was turned in by Ewan Faulkner from two yards out.

Grove started the second half looking for more goals. Gallacher sent a free kick against the bar before Baird shot wide in the opening minutes of the second half.

With eight second half minutes played, Grove got another goal. MacLeod completed his hat trick with a low finish inside the box.

Hunt scored Grove’s seventh after 50 minutes. The winger finally got the better of Wylie with a cool finish from close range.

Baird bagged himself another goal 60 seconds later. The diminutive midfielder twisted and turned away from the Craigie defenders before firing a low shot past Wylie from 12 yards.

Grove’s ninth arrived shortly after, as Luke Benvie added his name to the lengthy list of Grove goal scorers. The midfielder guided the ball past Wylie into the side netting.

A whole three minutes passed before Grove found the net again. Benvie’s cross was put in by Black, extending Grove’s lead to double digits.

Gallacher got his name on the score sheet just after the hour mark. The midfielder slipped the ball past Wylie, into the net.

With six minutes remaining, Grove made it 12 in spectacular fashion. MacLeod’s cross was acrobatically volleyed into the net by Chris Mudie, completing the route.

On the day, Grove were simply too good for Craigie to handle. This Craigie squad was made up of players from various age groups, that gave their all, but ultimately came up short. The form that Grove were in, any team would have struggled to compete with them. Despite, they should still be proud to have reached a cup final on the first place.

As for Grove, the way that they knocked the ball about was a joy to watch. If you totalled up the distance all 12 of their goals were scored from, it would probably only be about 50 yards. This will definitely not be the last piece of silverware that these players win.

Fraser MacLeod - Bagged a hat trick and bossed the midfield. A complete performance from the Grove man.
Ian Wylie - It was a difficult evening for the Craigie keeper, who could do little about the goals. Despite this, he made a number of really good stops that stopped the scoreline being more one-sided.

Mudie's Goal - A fantastic finish from the Grove defender that rounded off a perfect day at the office for his side.
Wylie's Save from Hunt - Just one of a number of fine stops from the Craigie keeper. Looked to be beaten, but did well to touch the ball wide with his boot.
