Grove Academy’s under 13s side claimed victory in the Logie Cup final thanks to a strong performance against St John’s High School. Grove took an early lead following an unfortunate own goal from St John’s defender Daniel Berry. St John’s came back into the game after and had a few opportunities at goal, but they couldn’t find the equaliser. They were left to rue these missed chances as Grove doubled their lead at the start of the second half through Jack Gordon. Owen McGolgan and Josh Milligan added two more goals to Grove’s tally to see them win the final with a 4-0  scoreline.

Grove began the game on the offensive and came incredibly close in the opening minute. Josh Milligan met a right-wing cross yards out from goal but fired his effort just over the crossbar. It was an early scare for St John’s.

In the sixth minute the right flank proved beneficial for Grove again as they scored their opener. Owen McGolgan made a terrific run down the right before cutting the ball back into the box. In an attempt to clear, the ball was inadvertently sliced into his own net by defender Daniel Berry.

After this setback St John’s started to become more involved in the game and began to create the better scoring chances. In the 16th minute Aaron Cosgrove managed to weave his way through the defence and got a shot away at goal. Unfortunately for him, his effort bounced back off of the post and away.

With 27 minutes gone on the clock it was Grove’s turn to be denied by the frame of the goal. McGolgan executed another trademark run down the right and cut the ball back to Daniel Ogilvie inside the box. His first time shot clipped the top of the crossbar and out.

Both sides had a few half chances before the break but none came to fruition. At the half time whistle the advantage remained with Grove.

Just four minutes into the second period Grove doubled their lead. Once again McGolgan proved to be the provider after another super run. He cut the ball back to Jack Gordon who was waiting in the box and he wasted no time in bulleting the ball into the back of the net.

In the 47th minute McGolgan turned from provider to scorer. The Grove number 10 managed to latch onto a corner kick, at the near post, and turned the ball into the net with an excellent header. Grove now seemed to be in a hugely dominant position.

Five minutes prior to the conclusion of the game St John’s nearly pulled a goal back. The ball fell to Jaye Davidson Elder inside the box and he pulled the trigger at goal. Grove goalkeeper Conner Milton managed to gather the ball well.

Two minutes before the end Grove sealed their win with a fourth goal. Josh Milligan executed a hugely impressive solo run, beating five defenders before firing the ball into the top right corner. Grove had saved their best goal until last.

The final whistle soon went and Grove could now celebrate being champions of the Logie Cup. Scoring four goals in a cup final is no mean feat and there is clearly a lot of skill amongst this group of players. Both sides had their moments in the game but Grove were that bit more clinical. They proved to be very worthy winners of the trophy.

Star Player

Owen McGolgan – Everything good about Grove’s attacking play went through their number 10. He provided the cross for the own goal, delivered the assist for the second and scored the third. An impressive day’s work.
Aaron Cosgrove – Proved to be the biggest threat for his team and came close to scoring on a few occasions. Great work ethic throughout.
Magic Moment

St John’s High School
Josh Milligan’s goal – An exceptional solo run and a powerful finish. The cherry on top of the icing on the cake.
Aaron Cosgrove’s effort that hit the post - A super run and terrific play to hold off that many defenders. If it had been inches to the right we would be talking about a great equaliser.
