Grove Academy were clinical in the senior Johnston Trophy as they swept away Morgan Academy 7-0. Astonishingly it is the seventh consecutive time Grove have won this competition. Darren Barnett scored two goals as Grove dominated proceedings at Tannadice.

With Grove looking to add further cup success to their repertoire they began the game in perfect fashion. Just two minutes in Barnett met a cross from the left and diverted the ball over the keeper and in.

Grove kept on attacking and came close again in the ninth minute of the game. Calum Faulkner cut in from the right side and fired a long range shot towards goal with his left foot. The ball flew just inches over the crossbar.

Four minutes later Grove did extend their lead via an unfortunate own goal from Kieran Wardlaw. The Morgan centre back, whilst attempting to clear a low cross, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Shortly afterwards Grove were 3-0 up. Right back Steven Howie pinged a great ball to Barnett up top. The Grove striker drove towards goal and evaded the oncoming goalkeeper. The ball then fell to Adam Brown, who had joined in the attack, and he turned it in to the empty net.

As the game entered its 32nd minute Grove were awarded a free kick just outside the Morgan penalty area. Brown was the man to take the kick but his curling shot went just above the target.

Eight minutes later Brown was threatening again as he pinched the ball off of the Morgan defence to give himself a clear run at goal. Out came Morgan keeper Daniel Anderson who slid in with his feet and made a fantastic tackle to stop Brown dead in his tracks.

Just before the half time whistle Grove did manage to score their fourth. Calum Faulkner made a great run down the left wing and moved into the box. Anderson came out to meet him, but the Grove number seven calmly laid the ball off to Barnett.  With the whole of the goal to aim at Barnett comfortably converted to give Grove a seemingly unassailable lead going into the break.

The opening moments of the second half were a far more even affair with the first opportunity arising seven minutes into the period. Ben Finnie executed a superb rabona pass into the path of Barnett, giving the striker another clear run at goal. This time the double goalscorer could only put his effort wide.

Soon afterwards Gavin Cathro was put through on goal but Anderson made a superb save with his legs to deny Grove a fifth goal.

In the 55th minute Faulkner made another superb run down the left hand side, weaving his way through the defense and into the penalty area. With just the keeper to beat he took his shot but, again, Anderson made a superb stop with his legs.

Anderson had to be called upon once again shortly after. Cathro won possession out on the left flank before driving towards the penalty area. He then reached the byline but still could not be stopped by the defence as he continued to weave his way into the box. He then laid the ball off to Cameron Hoskins who had arrived unmarked. He struck a fierce shot towards the bottom left hand corner of the net but Anderson managed to make an expert diving save to turn the ball away from the target.

Not all of the shots could be kept out forever and, in the 66th minute, Grove scored their fifth goal. A Grove corner was delivered into the box and, after it was palmed out by Anderson, the ball fell to the feet of Calum Faulkner. He worked an opening for himself before firing a low strike into the bottom right of the goal.

Just seven minutes later the score became 6-0. Matt McDonald was played in by a beautiful pass from Hoskins and he drove towards the goal. He then unleashed an unstoppable shot straimed into the top right corner of the net.

Grove rounded off their scoring seven minutes from time. Rory Faulkner expertly weaved his way through the Morgan defence inside the box and laid the ball across to Blair Whyte who was lingering just yards from the goal. The number three wasted no time and successfully dispatched the ball into the back of the net.

The final whistle went soon after and Grove could afford to celebrate their seventh win that was brought to them, rather aptly, by seven goals. Both teams should be proud of reaching a final but, on the day, it was Grove that took control and were shown to be deserving winners.
