Jeanfield Swifts ran out 10-1 winners in their Emma Mitchell league encounter with Monifieth Galaxy. Stephanie Kydd had initially put the home side in front but a flurry of Jeanfield goals before half time, courtesy of Leah Fleming, Rachel Wolecki, and Casey Townsley, saw the visitors 3-1 up at the break. They maintained this momentum throughout the second half to score another seven goals, with Townsley bagging five in total to steal the headlines. Also on the score sheet for Jeanfield in the second period was Kara Mailer and both Fleming and Wolecki grabbed a second goal each for themselves to round off a great day’s work for the Perth side.
The game was played with reduced numbers as Monifieth Galaxy fielded 8 players and Jeanfield Swifts fielded 9. The away team controlled possession of the ball right from the start and looked to neatly pass their way through the Monifieth back line. Leah Fleming had a chance early on after some neat build up play, but she put her resulting shot wide of the post.
In the 9th minute Jeanfield Swifts were awarded a corner. The kick was delivered straight into the penalty area towards Sophie Morrison. The number 23 chested it down and fired a shot at goal but Monifieth Galaxy’s Alice Laird Macdonald was on hand to block the shot. The loose ball was then picked up by Stephanie Kydd who played took it away from the danger area.
A minute later Morrison had another chance to open the scoring. Rachel Wolecki played a great ball through to set up Morrison for the shot but her effort was dragged wide of the post.
13 minutes into the game Eve Barnett had an attempt at goal. The number 35 fired a shot straight at goal but the Monifieth goalkeeper, Jessica Giblin, was on hand to keep the ball out.
Shortly afterwards it was Townsley who went close as she made a great run down the right flank. She then looked aimed towards the far post with her effort but it drifted agonizingly wide of the post.
Three minutes later, in the game’s 20th minute, the game witnessed its first goal and it fell the way of Monifieth Galaxy. The girls in red broke down the end of the field in expert fashion. Stephanie Kydd was played through expertly by Michelle Cameron and found herself in a one on one situation with Megan Sidey, in goal for Jeanfield. Kydd then expertly looped her shot over the goalkeeper and into the net to put Monifieth in the lead, defying their numerical disadvantage.
After this setback Jeanfield Swifts found a renewed sense of urgency. Casey Townsley kicked this off after another superb run down the right hand side but, after looking threatening, she was denied by some excellent tracking and defending from Monifieth’s Leah Watson.
Seven minutes after falling behind Jeanfield Swifts finally scored their equalizing goal. Leah Fleming picked up the ball on the right hand side and made a run infield before unleashing a shot about 20 yards out from goal. The ball nestled in the bottom right hand corner to kick-start a fantastic turnaround.
Just a minute afterwards Jeanfield Swifts scored their second with their next attempt on goal. Rachel Wolecki was the scorer and she neatly fired her effort low into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Once again, Jeanfield Swifts’ next chance resulted in a goal, putting them 3-1 up just before half time. Casey Townsley scored the first, of what was to be a goal filled morning for her, with a neat finish into the roof of the Monifieth Galaxy net.
As the half time whistle went Jeanfield Swifts and shown how to finish a half in exemplary fashion.

Jeanfield Swifts entered the second half with a clear mission, to attack relentlessly. Just two minutes into the second period the woodwork came into play to deny them a fourth goal. After a few ricochets the ball fell to Casey Townsley who took a fantastic looping shot towards goal. The ball, however, bounced off of the crossbar before being recovered by the Galaxy defence.
In the 34th minute the Jeanfield Swifts fourth goal eventually came. A corner kick was played short to Lisa Stewart, who then expertly picked out Townsley around the six-yard box. The number 25 expertly swiveled before firing a low, hard shot straight into the back of the net.
A minute later Townsley scored her hat-trick goal. After a defensive mix up Townsley raced into the box unseen and fired the ball home from close range. With three goals in six minutes this could well be a contender for one of the quickest hat-tricks ever.
Of course three goals for Townsley wasn’t quite enough for her as, in the 37th minute, she scored her fourth goal and made the score 6-1. Kara Mailer picked up the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and played it towards Townsley. After evading her defender she then fired her shot into the bottom left hand corner.
In the 47th minute Jeanfield Swifts scored a seventh. Kara Mailer added herself to the score sheet after picking the ball up on the edge of the penalty area and neatly slotting home into the bottom corner of the net.
Casey Townsley rounded off her goal scoring for the day with her fifth in the 54th minute of the match. A free kick was delivered towards Sophie Morrison who kept her composure and neatly laid the ball off about three yards out from goal. Townsley duly obliged and slid in to convert and make the score 8-1.
Two minutes from full time Leah Fleming scored her second of the game. From inside the penalty area she neatly worked an opening for herself and slotted the ball home to make it 9-1.
With virtually the last kick of the game Rachel Wolecki scored her second, and her sides tenth, with arguably the best goal of the game. With a corner kick delivered into the box she expertly volleyed the ball over the defence and keeper and into the net. The best goal was saved for last.
As the final whistle went Jeanfield Swifts could be proud of their attacking display, particularly in the second half. If they keep that level up they could well be in contention to fulfill their aims this season. As for Monifieth Galaxy, while the score may look unflattering, there is plenty to be positive about. With a few more players, and a couple of tweaks, they will not be too far off being a success. Their first half performance was particularly encouraging.

Michelle Cameron – Arguably the hardest working lone forward I’ve seen. Didn’t have too much to feed off but every time she got on the ball she made something happen. The assist for the Monifieth goal is a fine example.
Casey Townsley – Five goals says it all really doesn’t it? Had numerous other chances and was a menace for the Monifieth defence throughout the game. Some great finishes too.
Magic Moment
Monifieth Galaxy
Jeanfield Swifts
Stephanie Kydd’s goal – A superb finish which left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Rachel Wolecki’s final goal – A great volley to score Jeanfield’s tenth goal of the game. I’m sure that will be a goal to view over and over again.
