The home side had the better start and opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Nathan Brown lifted a free kick over Spartans’s defence and sent the ball into the path of Reenan Ward who swung the ball into the box from the left wing. The cross ball found Matt Aitchison who headed the ball to Lewis Mackinnon who netted into the left corner with a volley from 12 yards.
However, the home team was not to be in the lead for a long time. In the 11th minute, Alistair Hogg scored the equalizer for Spartans when he hit home from short range after a fine pass by Washe Manyathelo.
In the following, the match cooled down a bit. But ten minutes before half time, Andrew Dempster put the away side in front when he curled a free kick from 25 yards into the upper left corner of the net.

Immediately after the match had been restarted, Leith Athletic put the away side under pressure. Especially Craig Ferrier seemed to be in the mood to cause damage in the second half and in the 39th minute, the striker of the home side had his first big chance. However, his attempt from 12 yards narrowly drifted the wrong side of the post.
Two minutes after that, however, Bradley Barrett equalized for Leith Athletic when he lifted a ball over the goal keeper from more than 25 yards.
After having had several good opportunities, in the 42nd minute, Ferrier finally scored his first goal of the day. After having received the ball on the left wing, Ferrier entered the box, sidestepped a Spartans defender and netted into the bottom left corner from 16 yards.
Six minutes after that, Ferrier scored his second when slamming home into the right corner from 10 yards.
In the 57th minute, Ferrier could even celebrate his third goal of the match. After having been fouled in the box, he was awarded a penalty kick and did not hesitate to convert it to put his team 5:2 in front.
In the last couple of minutes of the match, Spartans’ were awarded a penalty kick as well but Adam McLean was able to parry the shot and save the 5-2 for his team.

Having scored a hattrick, there's no doubt Craig Ferrier was man of the match for Leith Athletic.
Although he had to take five goals, Spartans's goal keeper Jordan Cherrie did a great job and held his side in the game with brilliant saves for a long time.
