Red Star and Allander met in Alexandria to play this cup semi final on a very pleasant spring afternoon. After an evenly contested game, Red Star ran out eventual winners, scoring three goals, securing their place in the League Cup Final.

Allander were first to settle when James Tanassee burst through the middle to unleash a powerful shot that was heading towards the top corner, only for Red Star’s Ewan McCulloch to dive full length to tip the ball round the post for a corner.

Star began to come into the game with Cameron Hendry having a good shot expertly saved by Allander’s Callum Reid.

The opening goal came in the 28th minute when Hendry found Cameron Wylie running through on goal who then showed great composure to find the back of the net.

Red Star extended their lead in the 36th minute when Star’s Captain Ryan Deans showed neat footwork on the left wing to jink past the defender before crossing from the byline for the incoming Josh Coats to shoot past the helpless Reid in goal.

Half time: Allander Colts 0–2 Lochgilphead Red Star YFC

Allander started the second half brightly with a shot going narrowly wide of the post. Red Star struggled to create any chances of their own as Allander took control of the game.

In the 60th minute their perseverance paid off when a free kick from the halfway line was not cleared and Greg Fallon who came on for Allander at half time pounced on a loose ball and shot past McCulloch in goal.

This seemed to give Red Star a wake up call that this game was far from over. Star’s Coll McCallum was very unlucky to see his powerful free kick saved well by Reid. It was now end to end and Allander missed a glorious chance to equalise when Fallon shot over the bar after a corner landed unexpectedly at his feet.

Star’s Keir Whitefield put in a great tackle in the box as Allander desperately tried for their second goal. In the 77th minute the Argyll team scored their 3rd and decisive goal of the game when Lewis Mahaffey made a strong run into the box and his pass found Hendry free who calmly and efficiently hit the net from 10 yards.

Full time: Allander Colts 1–3 Lochgilphead Red Star YFC

This was a hard fought match between two teams who deserved to be in the final.

Allander tried hard to bring the game into extra time but Red Star’s grit and determination have given them the chance to lift some silverware this season.

Both teams and the match officials deserve enormous credit for the manner in which this semi-final was played.

Red Star now play Kilpatrick in the DFDL League Cup Final on the 25th of May at Dumbarton Stadium.
