Goalscorers v Central 15 Apr 13The SYFA West Region Under 15’s faced a tough challenge in their section. They had drawn 5-5 against South West last month in a match they should have won. South West then beat Central 4-2 leaving West a target of a win against Central by 3 goals to book their place in the Final.

West played Central on Friday Night and got the result they needed, but it wasn’t all one way traffic. In the 10th minute West opened the scoring when a free kick by Michael Kennedy (Renfrew Vics) played the ball into the back post and found Matthew Lamont who rose up amongst the packed defence to head home from the back post to head home.

West continued to press and in the 15th minute a great move from midfield saw Ryan Shields (Rangers SABC) play through Michael Kennedy who then fed a great ball through to Scott Russell (St Mirren BC) and he finished from close range, at this point West looked good to reach their target.

Central Region fought back for a spell and a great save by keeper Lloyd Fallon (Celtic BC) kept West in the game when he had to fingertip save the ball over the bar from a long range chip attempt.

West came back from that and Matthew Beckett (Antonine) played the ball into Ryan Shields and he rounded the diving keeper to slot the ball home at the back post.

So having reached the target West should have been able to increase on their goal tally but for whatever reason they took their foot off the gas and allowed Central to get back in the game and press West back.

In the second half for the first 10 minutes Central pressed and had several chances with two free kicks that should have caused West problems but both went wide of the mark

West nerves started to kick in and on a couple of occasions they were caught out in midfield as they tried to press and add to the score. Solid defending with the back four Central from breaking through and despite some good moves neither side was able to score in the second half

Full Time: SYFA Central 3-0 SYFA West

Primescout Europe Man of the Match: Michael Kennedy (Renfrew Vics)

So West achieved the score that saw them through on goal difference to join the Under 16 Squad in this season’s Inter Region Cup Finals in June. The16’s won both their games beating South West 2-1 and Central 7-2

Players for Regional Squads are selected from Boys Clubs, who nominate players, within the West Region and Regional Secretary, Jim Smith said “This is great for football in the West of Scotland to have both the 15’s and 16’s Teams through and for the 4th consecutive season we have the Under 16’s in the Finals. Each year the West Region has won one of these Finals and we are looking forward to this year’s finals."

Regional Chairman Peter Glancey said that once again the competition was great as part of the Regional Development programme encouraged everyone to come along on the day and support the squads.
