Tonight Maryhill travelled to Airdrie to play Albion Rovers at the Excelsior Stadium for a league game. Many thanks to Stuart the Albion coach for arranging a game at such a great venue. The game kicked off at 20.05pm and right from the start both teams were locked in a battle, with every player having the desire to win.

The game moved at pace and the first shot was fired in 6 minutes when Darcy was free in space and launched the ball just past the keepers post. The game flowed back and forth, on the 15th minute Maryhill pressed forward with good link up play between Clark and Darcy who headed the ball down to McQueen who fired in a shot for the keeper to collect.

Then came the first goal of the game. The Rovers goalkeeper threw the ball wide and the left back launched the ball forward catching Maryhill with the high line, the Rovers forward chased the ball one on one with McGeachie. The Maryhill keeper got there first and blasted a long range clearance and as the players followed the ball dropping out of the sky, Clark was waiting for it in the Rovers 6 yard box. He turned the defender and placed the ball in the net.

Maryhill looked in command of the midfield area with Lawson, McCarren, Furay and McQueen all playing the part. 25 minutes gone Albion Rovers had their first shot on goal, McGeachie collected.

Rovers kept pressing and the striker was through 1 on 1 with McGeachie who had an excellent save. Maryhill held the ball up in the Rovers half of the field with Clark, Lawson and Bentley linking up to drive a shot narrowly over the top of the bar.

Walker pressed forward and delivered and inch perfect cross, the ball ended up with Darcy who fired the ball low and hard, just past the keeper's right hand post.

McCarren won a free kick on the edge of the box, Clark took the free kick with keeper making an easy collect, but his throw out never got far with McQueen firing the ball into Lawson, his chipped shot was tipped over by an outstretched keeper.

Half Time: Albion Rovers Under 17s 0-1 Maryhill Juniors Under 17s

The game restarted at 9pm with Albion Rovers pumped up with the team talk at half time. With every one of their players chasing down every ball, they nearly equalised with the right back pushing the ball into the striker on the 18 yard line, with McGeachie diving at his feet to gather the ball. He punted the ball forward, Lawson won the ball and forced throw in on the 18 yard line.

The ball made its way to McCarren who headed the ball home 0-2 for Maryhill. Maryhill now kept pressing forward and in a 5 minute period kept Rovers pinned down in the penalty box. However, they got caught on the counter with the right back running at pace and delivered an inch perfect ball for the Stig to put past the outstretched Maryhill keeper.

Maryhill didn’t change their approach and played a passing game with Littler breaking forward in bursts, Bentley worked tirelessly and Darcy could have made it 3 when Clark beat two players and fired his shot over, when it would have been easier to pass to Darcy.

At the other end Paul made some great challenges with Maryhill keeping Rovers at bay.

Maryhill then introduced O’Rourke, Donnachie, Boyd, Chalmers and Delaney all had a role to play and all made an effect in the game, Boyd delivered the ball through to Donnachie who weaved his way through the defence.

Chalmers made it tough on the right for Rovers to breakdown Maryhill. Delaney came on to mop up the mid field area and Maryhill pressed right up to the final whistle.
