Giffnock Swifts Under 17s v St Cadocs Under 17s
PDJYFL U17 Div 1 - 17/03/2012
For the second week in a row Saints faced a tough game against Giffnock, this time in the search of precious league points.
It was a beautiful sunny day as the game kicked off and  within five minutes Martin Paul did well to get in behind the Swifts defence only  to see his shot fly across the face of the goal with the onrushing Youssef just missing out on getting that crucial touch. Giffnock then had a period of real pressure with four corners in succession, but failing to create any real danger. The game was getting tousy and there were a few tasty tackles with Joe and Gordon especially coming in for some rough treatment.
Conditions underfoot didn’t help as the previous day’s heavy rain had made for a very tricky surface and there were several meaty coming togethers in midfield as Jamie and Gordon had to fight for every bit of space. Saints were beginning to dominate and on nineteen minutes they got the breakthrough. From a free kick on the left, Chris put in an inviting, in swinging ball which Martin Paul did well to get to first and directed it past the Swifts keeper with a neat side footed finish. 1-0
Five minutes later Joe beat a couple of players to go one-on-one with the goalie but the keeper came out on top. Ten minutes later he once again had a good run and saw his shot hit the post and roll agonisingly along the line and when the defender played it away it only got as far as Martin Paul, but his strike was also kept out. Jamie and Kieran were working really hard and Gordon was getting his quota of shots in, but Saints failed to add to their lead.
Half time: Giffnock Swifts Under 17s 0-1 St Cadocs Under 17s
Saints were on top straight away after the restart and Martin Paul met a Danny long throw with a powerful header, but it went just past the post. Jamie then saw his snap-shot saved well by the keeper and Joe had another shot well saved as the goalie kept Swifts in the match.
He matched these superb stops, keeping out Kieran and Youssef in quick order. His excellent work was rewarded in sixty five minutes when Reese Walker broke away for Swifts and scored an excellent goal to even things up. 1-1
This was a real kick in the teeth for Saints and for the next ten minutes they seemed to lose their way completely as Swifts took the initiative, but although they had plenty of possession they failed to capitalise, thanks mainly to fine defending and good goalkeeping from Owen.
They then had a moment of madness when one of their players had an off the ball kick at Gordon and the ref had the easiest decision of the day, showing him the red card. Saints got their composure back and took advantage of the extra man as they piled forward in search of the winner.
With time running out and into the last ten minutes it finally came when Gordon broke in from the right and had a powerful shot beaten out by Swifts hardest working player, but unfortunately for the keeper the rebound fell at the feet of Jamie Waddell who wasted no time in despatching the ball into the back of the net. 2-1
Try as they might, Saints could not add to their tally but it was not for the want of trying as they continued to play in their opponents half and as the ref blew for time up they celebrated a very well deserved three points against a very determined side.
Full time: Giffnock Swifts Under 17s 1-2 St Cadocs Under 17s
St Cadocs goalscorers: Martin Paul & Jamie Waddell
St Cadocs' MOTM – With David out again Martin went up front and was a constant danger to Swifts defenders. Took his goal well and put in a great shift.
