St Cadocs Under 17s vs Giffnock Swifts Under 17s
Tom Phillips Cup – 10/03/2012
A break from the league this week and it was a Phillips cup game against Giffnock. Owen replaced Michael after injury and Danny also made a welcome return. Martin Paul, also continuing his comeback after long term injury played at centre half, as Div was completing his last match of a suspension and David was out injured.
For the first time in a long time there was no wind, rain, freezing cold or any other metrological issues. Conditions were great for football and it only took two minutes for St Cadocs to open the scoring. A flowing move down the right saw Gordon latch on to a Brian O’Donnell through ball and his looping cross was in the air so long it could have had a cup of tea. When it came back towards earth the Giffnock keeper tried to take it but there were too many bodies in the way and it fell kindly to Youssef who could have blown it in from two inches. They all count and as all good strikers know, if you’re in the right place, the chances will come. 1-0
Both sides passed the ball well and were well organised, especially at the back. Chances were few and far between. Youssef was using his pace and power up front and it was developing as a really good contest between him and his equally physical opponent at centre half. Gordon had a couple of screamers go just wide and Jamie had a free kick just graze the post. It took another fourty minutes for Saints to extend their lead and it was Paul Kerins who started the move with a good ball to Youssef who in turn repaid the favour and left Paul with an easy finish from five yards. 2-0
Half Time: St Cadocs Under 17s 2-0 Giffnock Swifts Under 17s
After the break, Giffnock came out fighting and forced a corner after 55 minutes. It was played hard into the box and it took two attempts by Reese Walker to score and bring his side right back into it. 2-1
St Cadocs retained their composure though, and had most of the play, although Swifts were, as always, stuffy opponents. As time wore on St Cadocs always looked the more likely side to score. It was also good to see the Joe and Danny combo regain their partnership on the left and from this flank came the goal of the game in the 78th minute. Danny started the move and it was passed accurately and at pace between three players, till finally Youssef played a lovely ball into the box and Conor ghosted in to score the third and final goal of the day and book a next round home match against Glenbrae Colts on March 31st. 3-1
Swifts tried to come back into it, but it was Saints who still looked the more penetrating, and in the final minute Joe had a good run on the left and cut in to see his shot come back off the bar. Both teams meet again next week in the league and it will be a captivating contest.

St Cadocs Man of the Match: A good disciplined performance from the whole team and Youssef gets it this week for another all action, unselfish performance up front.
