Helensburgh Under 17s V St Cadocs Under 17s
PJDYFL Under 17s Div 1 - 03/03/2012

I do like to be beside the seaside, but not when the weather is like this. The game started with blinding sunshine and also a brisk, cold wind blowing in from the sea, and straight from kick off Saints started like a typhoon. After only fifteen seconds Yousseff nearly scored from a Jamie through ball, but the Helensburgh keeper made the first of countless great saves to deny St Cadocs. There followed a flurry of chances for Saints as David, Joe and Gordon all had good efforts saved by a fine goalie. He made another great stop in the seventh minute but Youseff scored from the rebound to give Saints a deserved lead. 1-0

As the sunshine gave way to rain, and with the temperature dropping, Burgh briefly came back into it, and with Owen out injured, Michael played his part by making a couple of good saves. St Cadocs, though, were whipping up a storm again and Joe was creating some good chances which went begging. He was turning Burgh’s defence inside out and was taken out off the ball in 33 minutes by a clearly frustrated No. 15, right in front of the referee. It was the clearest red card you’ll ever see and Joe was lucky to escape serious injury. Down to ten men Helensburgh were realising that another squall was going to hit them, and it did. Just five minutes later Jamie Waddell buried a great free kick from twenty yards and the lead was doubled. 2-0

Half Time: Helensburgh Under 17s 0-2 St Cadocs Under 17s

Saints continued their dominance straight from the whistle and it seemed like we would see a torrent of goals, but despite the shots raining in, the Burgh keeper was equal to just about everything as he gave a master class in shot stopping and was probably the only guy on the park who could still feel his fingers in the cold. The game was finally clinched in the 68th minute when Connor finished off a great move which saw Jamie play a great ball to Joe who in turn showed superb control and cut a lovely ball back for Connor to make it three. 3-0

St Cadocs were now on cloud nine and the turbulence of the last two weeks evaporated to see them strike back with a challenge to retain their championship.

Full time: Helensburgh Under 17s 0-3 St Cadocs Under 17s

St Cadocs goalscorers: Youssef, Jamie & Conor

Man of the Match: Joe, Chris and Gordon were all contenders, but slotting in at left back, he didn’t put a foot wrong and not only defended well but got up to support the attackers, so Paul Kerins takes it this week.
