Caledonian Youth kicked off the first game of the season against Mauchline Killie, a game which marked each team’s first competitive 11-a-side match for both sides.

Caledonian went straight on the attack and won themselves a corner within the first 5 minutes of the game.  The corner was not cleared by the Mauchline defence and allowed Adam Lawrie an opportunity to open the scoring which he did not take – putting his shot just wide.

A few minutes after this chance Caledonian took the lead after a mistake from Mauchline’s keeper Ross Holland.  The goalie dropped the ball right at the feet of Adam Lawrie, leaving the striker with an open goal at an angle.  Lawrie’s shot hit the post but the ball ran to
Johnnie Burdon who tapped in from 6 yards.

Mauchline responded with their own short spell of pressure, the best chance for the home team coming from a free kick.  John Montgomery took a shot from the kick producing a good save from Kyle McLymont.

The next chance of the game fell to Caledonian after a brilliant run down the left wing from Shawn Reid.  The winger smashed the ball across the face of goal towards Lewis Ross who was coming in at the back post, Ross had an open goal to aim at but did not connect to the ball and the danger was cleared.

Mauchline continued to soak up pressure and launched counter attacks when they could.  They scored from a counter attack to level the game.  John Montgomery found space on the right wing and was able to cross the ball to Dylan Cochrane who tapped the ball in easily for the equaliser.

Caledonian went on the attack again and found themselves ahead for a second time shortly after Mauchline’s goal.  Shawn Reid ran down the left wing and got a cross into the box, the cross was met by Lewis Ross who was able to finish well at the back post.

Mauchline again responded to going behind by creating a chance for themselves.  Jack Grosier won the ball well in midfield and played a brilliant through ball to Frazer Bryden who was clear inside the Caledonian area.  Bryden dwelled on the ball for too long and allowed a defender to get back and get a challenge in before Bryden could his shot in.

Caledonian increased their lead further after Lewis Ross played a good cross in from the right wing towards Adam Lawrie.  Ross Holland came to collect the cross but missed the ball and allowed Lawrie to tap the ball in to make the score 3-1.  Just before half time, Caledonian went 4-1 up after a corner they had was cleared.  Lee McLymont gathered the ball around 30 yards out and shot, the ball went through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner.

At half time, the game was fairly even and a 4-1 score line is very harsh on Mauchline.  Caledonian have played well and deserved a lead after they took the chances they created compared to Mauchline who did not finish their chances.

Half Time: Mauchline Killie 1 - 4 Caledonian Youth

Mauchline kicked off the second half and were able to create the first chance of the half shortly after the restart.  Dylan Cochrane played a good ball to put Andrew McAtee through.  McAtee drove towards goal and forced Kyle McLymont to make a good save to maintain Caledonian’s lead.

After an early scare Caledonian took control of the half and did not give Mauchline another chance as good as McAtee’s.  Shawn Reid went on a long run down the left wing and got his shot away but it went just wide.

For the next while in the half Caledonian kept the ball well but were not able to create any clear cut chances.  Their 5th goal did not result from good play but from poor defending.  Mauchline were not able to clear the ball from inside their area, this allowed Adam Lawrie to nip in and finish well passed Ross Holland in the Mauchline goal.  As the game neared the end Caledonian got another goal.  Adam Lawrie created space for himself and got a shot away which was well saved by Ross Holland.  The ball fell to Morgan Bird who got the ball out of his feet and finished well to round off the scoring.

Caledonian played well throughout the game and deserved the win – they played good football and created a lot of chances.  Mauchline did not play very well in the second half and will look to play to the level they did in the first half in their next game to give themselves a chance of taking some points.
