Norrie McCathies made an impressive start to their season with a 2-0 victory over Elgin Star.

The opening moments of the first half saw both teams scrapping away in an attempt to take an early advantage. Both teams managed to win their first corners of the game in the opening ten minutes but unfortunately for them they were both dealt with comfortably.

Elgin Star tested the McCathies’ keeper Daniel Watt with long range shots but they were never threatening. With the match needing a goal it was Norrie McCathies who got it in the 24th minute. The ball found its way out to the right channel and as the ball was crossed Cameron Lambie in the Elgin goal came to collect but could not grasp hold of the ball and Roddy McGouldrick headed the ball into the net.

Elgin Star were looking to get back into the match and very nearly did four minutes later. Ethan Anderson picked up the ball inside the box on the left and shot past the keeper but unfortunately for him his effort was cleared off the line.

Norrie McCathies came within inches of doubling their lead in the 29th minute.  Roddy McGouldrick raced clear of the defence and his shot, although beating the goalkeeper, sailed just over the bar. They were looking the more dangerous and were unlucky in the 35th minute. From a corner on the right Adam Frazer rose above the defence but his header came crashing off the bar and was eventually cleared.

As the second half got underway Norrie McCathies were looking to continue in the same way they ended the first half and four minutes in they got a second goal. Ryan Mullen picked up the ball on the left side of the box. His left foot shot-come-cross evaded the outstretched arm of Cameron Lambie and hit the back of the net via the right hand post much to Mullen’s delight.

Elgin Star looked to claw their way back into the game and head tennis in the McCathies’ box in the 46th minute nearly lead to a goal but Malvern Edson’s header was cleared to safety.

The game then lost its rhythm for a good few minutes as play was halted due to a player from each team picking up an injury in separate incidents.

57 minutes had been played and Norrie McCathies were comfortable but soon found themselves a man down. Elgin’s Edson was on the end of a tackle from McCathies number 7 who seemed to raise his hand to Edson and the referee had no option but to produce a red card.

Elgin would have hoped to use their man advantage to get back into the game but the few attempts they had were not threatening enough. Norrie McCathies were looking to wrap the game up with a third goal and in the 67th minute a corner from the right was met by the head of Rhys Parker but his header was cleared off the line and out for another corner.

Elgin Star were running out of time and in the final minute they won a corner.  From the delivery Callum Allardice met it but the woodwork was struck again and McCathie’s goal was not to be breached.

Elgin Star will be disappointed that they were not more clinical but Norrie McCathies will be delighted with this victory and gets their season off and running with the only disappointment being that they finished this game with 10 men.
