Extra time strikes from Athan Barry and Jamie Bannerman guided Lochend FA past Maryfield United and into the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

A 6-1 win over Bathgate Thistle in the second round saw Lochend travel to the City of Discovery to face highflying Maryfield, who had already eliminated Dundee’s reigning champions Ferry Athletic en route to Round Three.

The early exchanges saw both sides try and establish a foothold in the game, with Lochend seeing the lion’s share of possession without ever testing Cameron Landsburgh in the Maryfield goal.

Maryfield came into the game unbeaten and crafted their first opening when Dillon Gurang slipped in Arran Duncan who couldn’t hit the target with his effort.

After a slow start the game began to open up as both sides went in search of the opener. Sam Mackie was sent in for Lochend only to fire wide of the post before another Duncan strike took a wicked bobble in front of Kieran Wood, but the Lochend stopper managed to make the save.

With 21 minutes played the deadlock was broken by Lochend when Riley Haston found the net. Georgios Kavoussanakis provided the pass, and Haston made no mistake with a low finish past Landsburgh.

Both teams passed up golden opportunities to get the second goal of the game on the stroke of half time. Duncan powered his way into the Lochend box only to see his strike kept out by the feet of Wood.

From this the visitors raced down the pitch with a low cross being played into Athan Barry, who’s first time effort was somehow kept out by Landsburgh from point-blank range.

Maryfield have been no strangers to quick goals this season and found the equaliser through Gurang a minute into the second half. The winger raced clear of the Lochend defence and despite seeing his initial effort kept out by Wood managed to force the ball over the line at the second attempt.

Dylan McKellar tested Landsburgh after a weaving run through the Maryfield defence while Sol Campbell saw a low free kick held by Woods.

Lochend did retake the lead when Sam Mackie was slipped in behind the Maryfield defence, and he made no mistake with a cool finish past Landsburgh.

Maryfield had their keeper to thank moments later when he denied Jamie Bannerman from close range. Barry saw an effort blocked before he poked the rebound wide as Lochend looked to put the game to bed.

Despite Lochend’s dominance, it was Maryfield that grabbed the fourth goal of the game on the hour mark in spectacular fashion. The ball was played into Duncan on the left of the box, and he chipped the ball over Wood to bring his side level.

Lochend felt they should have had a penalty in the closing minutes when Mackie was taken down by David Hughes. The reactions of the Maryfield players suggested that they got away with one late in the game.

There was still enough time remaining for both sides to create one final chance, with Bannerman curling a shot wide from just inside the box before Gurang was denied by Wood in injury time.

After Maryfield had netted a minute into the second half, it was Lochend’s turn to strike early as they retook the lead in extra time. Barry’s free kick squirmed through Landsburgh to give the visitors the advantage.

A Maryfield free kick seven minutes from time presented them the chance to equalise for a third time, but Nairn Gaffney saw his curling effort come crashing off the woodwork.

As the hosts pushed for a winner, Lochend put the game to bed when Bannerman latched onto a long ball that caught out Landsburgh and rolled the ball into the empty net to seal his side’s passage into Round Four.

There was still time remaining for one final twist as Maryfield were awarded a penalty that Gaffney smacked home, but it was too little too late for the Dundee side who suffered their first defeat of the season.
