Three first half goals saw Clydebank FC stun Larkhall Thistle AFC in the 4th round fixture of the Scottish Youth Football Association Cup at Netherton. Clydebank came into the game with good form in the cups, currently undefeated in their Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Youth League Cup section one group, scoring a remarkable 25 goals in 6 games.

They started this cup game in a similar fashion, dominating the opening exchanges and the first chance came their way in the 9th minute. Striker James Holt crossed into the box towards the head of Johnathan Mulgrew, but his goal-bound header was superbly saved by Thistle goalkeeper Ryan Blake.

Thistle looked to absorb the pressure and hit on the counter attack, a tactic which almost worked out in the 15th minute. Terrific footwork and blistering pace from Marc Semple on the breakaway saw him wriggle his way into the box, but he was crowded out by the Clydebank defence who cleared.

Two minutes later, another chance fell to Thistle, Steven Nicholls picking up the ball on the edge of the box and bending a shot towards goal, going just wide of the right hand post and the scores remained level.

Despite a brief Thistle resurgence Clydebank’s domination paid off in the 29th minute. A great cross into the box found Connor Hamilton at the near post and the striker rose highest to power his header past Blake.

Seven minutes later Clydebank doubled their lead with Hamilton yet again involved. This time it was the young strikers free kick that found Dylan Coll in the box and his powerful shot took a deflection into the bottom left hand corner.

Then, just before the half time whistle, Clydebank’s Kevin Lleshi raced down the left hand side into the box teeing a ball towards the middle.  In the perfect place was Holt who deftly headed the cross home to make it 3-0 for the home side in the 45th minute.

The first chance of the second half fell to Thistle almost immediately after kick off, in the 45th minute. Ben Edgar picked up the ball on the right wing and delivered a wicked cross into the middle , with so much curl it would have ended up in the back of the net but for a smart save from Dylan Brown.

As Thistle began to tire Clydebank’s Hamilton and Holt really came into their own with some lovely passing play to create chances for each other and their team mates. One such chance was created in the 51st minute with Hamilton testing Blake with a bending shot but he was equal to it and pulled off a spectacular punch to clear.

In the 72nd minute Clydebank finally got their fourth when Hamilton raced through on goal and fired his shot towards the bottom right hand corner. However, it was well saved by Blake who then saved the rebound as well but he could do nothing to stop Holt from blasting in the loose ball and notching his second of the match.

Six minutes later, Thistle pushed forwards for a consolation with Edgar jinking in and out of the Clydebank defence and finding space in the box. He fired a shot from an acute angle and smashed the ball off the outside of the right hand post.

The last chance of the game fell to Clydebank in the 90th minute with the ball falling to Mulgrew in the middle of the box but he blasted over the bar. With the win Clydebank progress into the next round of the SYFA Cup and will find out their opponents in the draw on Tuesday 21st November.

Star Player

A difficult one with Connor Hamilton , Johnathan Mulgrew and Dylan Coll all deserving a mention but with two goals it has to go James Holt. Fantastic positioning and awareness for both his goals showing his ability on both the deck and in the air.
A mention deserves to be given to Ben Edgar who was lively coming off the bench creating a lot of chances, but it had to be given to Ryan Blake. Despite conceding four goals he was superb all game with some spectacular saves including from from Mulgrew’s header in the 9th minute. Another one being from Hamilton’s shot in the 51st minute and the score line could have got a lot worse barring his performance.
Magic Moment
Clydebank FC
Larkhall Thistle AFC
The magic moment for Clydebank would have to be Kevin Holt's first goal in the 45th minute. Great wing play initially from Kevin Lleshi on the left hand side to create space, he then put a perfect cross into the box. Great movement and positioning from Holt and a fantastic header to finish off the tie before half time.
The magic moment for Larkhall Thistle would have to be Jack Frome’s fantastic piece of skill in the 27th minute. The young striker showed fantastic footwork on the left wing to bamboozle two Clydebank defenders who were closing him down and power forward. Though the attack did not amount to anything it was an astonishing piece of skill to get out a tight situation and keep the pressure on Clydebank.
