Gothia Cup round-up: five Scottish clubs kick off in Sweden

Written by

Yesterday saw the prestigious annual Gothia Cup tournament kick off in Gothenburg, Sweden. The largest youth tournament in world football, it features a staggering 1600 sides from over 80 nations around the globe. This year saw Scotland represented by five sides, at different age groups.

Tynecastle FC kicked off their cup journey with a pleasing day for all age groups, as the Under 13s and Under 14s both achieved a 1-0 win against French side FC Franconville PB and Swedish outfit GAIS respectively. Whilst the Under 15s achieved a respectable draw against Norwegian opposition in Lorsenkog IF.

Currie Star FC received a mixed bag of results, as their Under 14s first team edged a 1-0 victory against Swedish club Alta IF, whereas the second team narrowly lost 2-0 to FC Jarfalla of Sweden. The under 13s both had a day to forget, as the first team were beaten convincingly by local side IFK Stocksand 8-0, and the second team lost by the same margin to Jordanian opposition in Jordan Knights FA.

Unfortunately it was a less successful opener for Boroughmuir Thistle FC's girl sides, as the Under 14s sunk to a close 1-0 loss against Karra KIF of Sweden. Also, the Under 13s suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Swedish opponents BK Hacken. Sadly it was a similar story for the 12s first and second teams, as they lost 6-1 to Sjomarkens IF and 5-0 to Savedalens IF respectively, both from Sweden. Linlithgow Rose CFC 15s girls suffered the same unfortunate fate, losing 3-0 to Swedish outfit Spjutstorps IF.

However Hazlehead Academy were able to finish the day on a high note, as they cruised to an excellent 4-0 trashing of Swedes, IFK Osteraker, to round up the day's results.

All the best to the Scottish sides competing in the Gothia Cup for the rest of the tournament!
