Hamilton Accies came into this match with something to prove after last week’s shock 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone at the Excelsior Stadium. They more than proved that their place at the head of the league table is deserved with a convincing 5-1 win over visitors St. Mirren.

The first chance of the match came on the eleventh minute, when Accies’ Nico Sumsky struck a free kick from twenty five yards and watched as keeper Dan Wilks comfortably saved.

Shortly after came the opening goal when Kieran MacDonald crossed into a crowded box. The ball was then skilfully brought under control by Lucas Tagliapietra who went on to thunder his shot into the back of the net from eight yards.

St. Mirren’s first chance on goal came when Michael Brewster picked up the ball in Hamilton’s half and passed out wide to Emmanuel Sonupe on the wing. The resulting shot from the edge of the box sailed well wide of the near post and this was to be their high point in the first half.

With 21 minutes played, the ever industrious Sumsky got the ball in midfield and made a surging run in on goal before releasing an early strike in an attempt to outwit the keeper. Wilks though was having none of it and made a comfortable save.

Three minutes later Brophy made a strong run forward before playing the ball through St. Mirren’s defence for Sumsky. His shoot from three yards looked a likely goal, but Wilks was again to the rescue with a brave block.

Minutes later and Brewster brought down Steven Boyd outside St. Mirren’s penalty. Brophy chose to take the free-kick which was sweetly struck into the top left hand corner of the net. Wilks didn’t stand much of a chance and hardly had time to move.

Before half-time Greg Docherty broke through on goal and had his shot from close range saved. The rebound came back out and Docherty had a second chance, but keeper Wilks was up to the challenge and saved again. Brophy then had a chance from edge of box, but the keeper was able to make his third save in as many seconds.

There was hardly time for fans to return to their seat's when Accies’ Scott McMann hit a well struck cross that Craig Watson was able to head in for the home side’s third goal of the evening.

Fans of Hamilton had just finished their celebrations when Scott McMann was at it again and hit another perfectly executed cross in on goal for Sumsky to bend low and head in for Accies’ fourth.

This last goal seemed to wake St. Mirren from their slumber and began a spell of play that saw some nice football with Kieran Sadlier shooting wide from twenty five yards. He was involved in the action again after Lewis Morgan won a header form a challenge in the centre of the pitch. Sadlier ran in on goal, but his shot went wide of the mark.

All St. Mirren’s hard work was to eventually pay off though, when from a Sadlier corner, Mark Williams got hold of  the ball at the near post and his resulting shot found the back of the net.

That man again, Sadlier, had another chance from a free kick on the 76th minute mark. He managed to put it only inches above the bar.

The final goal of the match came when Accies were awarded a penalty on the 81st minute for a push. Brophy confidently stepped up and was able to convert by sending the St. Mirren keeper the wrong way.

This was a well-crafted and assured performance from the home side and fans can be upbeat. Although the result does St. Mirren no favours, they can take heart from a better second half performance with Sadlier and Morgan standing out.
