The SYFA West Region Under 15’s faced a tough challenge in their section. They had drawn 5-5 against South West last month in a match they should have won. South West then beat Central 4-2 leaving West a target of a win against Central by 3 goals to book their place in the Final.
West played Central on Friday Night and got the result they needed, but it wasn’t all one way traffic. In the 10th minute West opened the scoring when a free kick by Michael Kennedy (Renfrew Vics) played the ball into the back post and found Matthew Lamont who rose up amongst the packed defence to head home from the back post to head home.
West continued to press and in the 15th minute a great move from midfield saw Ryan Shields (Rangers SABC) play through Michael Kennedy who then fed a great ball through to Scott Russell (St Mirren BC) and he finished from close range, at this point West looked good to reach their target.
Central Region fought back for a spell and a great save by keeper Lloyd Fallon (Celtic BC) kept West in the game when he had to fingertip save the ball over the bar from a long range chip attempt. West came back from that and Matthew Beckett (Antonine) played the ball into Ryan Shields and he rounded the diving keeper to slot the ball home at the back post.
So having reached the target West should have been able to increase on their goal tally but for whatever reason they took their foot off the gas and allowed Central to get back in the game and press West back.
In the second half for the first 10 minutes Central pressed and had several chances with two free kicks that should have caused West problems but both went wide of the mark
West nerves started to kick in and on a couple of occasions they were caught out in midfield as they tried to press and add to the score. Solid defending with the back four Central from breaking through and despite some good moves neither side was able to score in the second half

So West achieved the score that saw them through on goal difference to join the Under 16 Squad in this season’s Inter Region Cup Finals in June. The16’s won both their games beating South West 2-1 and Central 7-2
Players for Regional Squads are selected from Boys Clubs, who nominate players, within the West Region and Regional Secretary, Jim Smith said “This is great for football in the West of Scotland to have both the 15’s and 16’s Teams through and for the 4th consecutive season we have the Under 16’s in the Finals. Each year the West Region has won one of these Finals and we are looking forward to this year’s finals."
Regional Chairman Peter Glancey said that once again the competition was great as part of the Regional Development programme encouraged everyone to come along on the day and support the squads. |

This game saw South West Region face West Region in a very competitive match between two sides knowing that a win would see the victor progress into the Inter Regional cup final. West started the game strongly and took the lead after only three minutes when Mark Callaghan (Clydebank) threaded a pass into the feet of Kevin Lavelle (Antonine) who swivelled past the defender and rifled a right footed dipping shot from 20 yards into the top left hand corner. Both teams then had a share of possession in the middle of the park with Corey (Clydebank) and Andrew Hume (Antonine) trying their best to get the West going. After twenty minutes, West keeper Ben Collinson (Clydebank) was called into action when he made a double save from a South West free-kick and then again from the rebound. This was to be an important save as it kept the West region ahead in the tie.
Ruairidh Clark (St Peter's) then tried his luck from 30 yards but the ball whistled just over the bar. Both sides looked to take the initiative as the half went on but there was to be no more goal mouth action as the defence of both sides stood strong and in particular Chris Dooley (Antonine) who made a few excellent interceptions.

In the second half, the South West region started strong, pressing high onto the West back line. The West were to be pinned back and in the 52nd minute the South West were to be awarded a contentious penalty when Andrew Hume stretched out his leg to block the ball in his own area, only for the home teams player to go down softly and win South West a penalty. The striker dispatched the penalty into the roof of the net despite Ben Collinson’s best efforts. West then made a few changes with Craig Cowan (Antonine) coming on into the middle of the park. His introduction seemed to make an impact as he went close on a few occasions with one header going wide of the post and another going over the bar. The game was then stretched with both teams creating chances as the South West struck the bar and David Coyle (Clydebank) came close when his shot went just over after good individual play.
In the 72nd minute the game was all but over when Aaron Graham (Antonine) showed great skill when he twice faked his move and then with his weaker left foot hit in a cross for Craig Cowan (Antonine) to rise above the rest and glide a header past the outstretched goalkeeper in off the opposition goalpost to put West region 2-1 up. Kieran Hughes (Vale of Clyde) also had a chance late on but he was to be foiled by an inspired keeper. Chris Dooley then went close in the final minute when he broke forward from his own box went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who did very well in making a great save. It would have been a well deserved goal but it wasn't to be. That was to be the last action and the West progressed to this years final with a great 2-1 victory.

A delighted West Manager, Davie Cartwright, commented after the match." Tonight was nerve-wracking for everyone involved, the players had to dig deep, but our sheer determination saw us through. Well done to all players involved in both our matches against Central and those who played in this match They were are all a credit, well done in making it to this years Inter Regional Cup Final"
The East Conference has not yet started so West will have to wait to see who they play and no pressure on the 16's, but West have won this age group for the past 4 years! |

You probably have heard the phrase "a game of two halves" and this game certainly fitted that quote. West Region played Celtic BC indoors at Toryglen with five West Region players playing for their own club Celtic BC.
Celtic started the game quickest off the mark and West keeper Scott Matthews (Baillieston BC) was brought right into the game having to pull off two great saves in the first 10 minutes to stop Celtic from opening the scoring. However it was West who were to go in front when they broke down the park in the 15th minute and a ball crossed into the box found Scott Russell (St Mirren BC) free in the box to head home. Five minutes later in a similar move, it was Bradley Newlands (Rangers SABC) whose strength got him free of his marker and he too was able to finish from close range.
Both sides then seemed to settle into the game and both had chances with this time West's keeper Connor Houghton (Rangers SABC) being called on to stop the Celtic comeback. Celtic's midfield was starting to get a hold of the game and Danny Drummond in particular was causing the West problems in the midfield. At the other end, Celtic's keeper Lloyd Fallon again was able to thwart West's attempts in the box. Both players were part of the Regional Squads for this season.
Half Time: SYFA West 2-0 Celtic BC
Matthew Beckett (Renfrew Vics) added a third for the West shortly after half time when the ball was played through from midfield and he used his pace to break through on goal and was able to finish with a low drive from close range.
In the last 30 minutes Jamie Crawford (St Mirren) had chances but was unable to find the net and Campbell Gibson (Harmony Row) also was unable to convert a chance after 60 minutes.
As part of their development programme, West used the game to rotate their squad into different positions whilst Celtic were able to hold the same formation. In the 75th minute, Celtic were able to break through the West's changed defence and the striker was in on goal and fired home a tremendous volley from 20 yards out. This seemed to give Celtic renewed energy and again they pressed in the 80th minute where a good move saw the ball played wide and the cross into the box found an unmarked player who made no mistake with a free header Celtic to make it 3-2.
In the final minutes, Celtic threw everything at the West defence and that pressure paid off when another ball through the heart of the defence that saw the pacey Celtic strike evade a challenge and again it was a long range drive that sailed into the top corner to level the match.
After the match, West coach Cameron Carmichael said that West had controlled the game for an hour, however it was always going to be a gamble to change around the squad, but that was what development was all about and they had learned from the game.
