St Peters eventually managed to claw their way back into this tie after coming from behind to clinch victory 3-1 thanks to some Callum Scullion heroics. The game started slowly and neither side created any real clear-cut opportunities.

With only four minutes gone Josh Lafferty forced St Peters goalie McLaren into a save while on 16 minutes Bradley Rae fired over from the edge of the box for St Peters. That was the extent of first-half action.

In the second half we really saw this game come to life and it didn’t take long either. On 22 minutes numer 7 Marc Walker found himself opening the scoring for Tass Thistle, giving McLaren very little chance to deny the goal scorer.

However, the game changed on the introduction of substitute Callum Scullion who became a St Peters hero and a Tass villain. On 32 minutes he opened his account with a cool finish and then four minutes later he managed to grab his brace.

It then only got worse for Tass who relied on Jackson to keep out the attempt of Shaun Clark thanks to a fine save. But, Jackson could nothing to stop Scullion clinching his hat-trick. Clark turned playmaker as he chipped the ball into the path of Scullion who finished the ball and with that the game.

Neither side could be separated at the end of 40 minutes thanks to competent defending from both teams. That was not for the lack of trying though and on ten minutes a wonderful save by Jamie Forrester for Milngavie kept them in the match. A free-kick from distance was hit by Jamie MacDonald with both accuracy and venom, though Forrester managed to deny the goal.

It was then the crossbar that frustrated Milngavie as Joe Slee cut in from the left hand side and found himself on the edge of the box. With a cry of shoot from the crowd he immediately did and his attempt grazed the crossbar on the way over much to the relief of Kieran Craw.

Half Time: Gow Valley 0-0 Milngavie Wanderers

Forrester was then called into action again to deny Jamie MacDonald. Another free-kick was directed goal wards by the midfielder only for Forrester to tip the shot on to the bar. It looked certain that Gow would score with the follow up, but Connor McGrane could only header his attempt on to the bar and see the ball eventually clearer away by Milngavie.

With six minutes left to play it looked as though Gow were going to score the opening goal. A direct ball forward into the path of Scott Thomson sent him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. His attempt appeared to be on target yet Gow found Forrester in fine form and he denied them once again.

Milngavie started the competition in strong fashion, seeing off Oban Saints, Dunbartonshire League Champions 12/13. Early on it was evident that Joe Slee was to be a stand out player and eight minutes in he opened the scoring. A ball was whipped in from the right and with great composure the ball was dispatched past the oncoming keeper.

Oban Saints had an opportunity to equalise minutes later after Jamie Forrester made a mistake. His poor pass landed at the feet of Jay Cooper who looked odds on to score. However, Forrester atoned for the error by putting enough pressure on the striker who poked it wide.

Oban then went on to pay for not taking the chance. 14 minutes later and Milngavie doubled the score after Slee switched play to the right hand side for Nathan Carmichael. He appeared to have lost the chance initially, but he managed to recover the opportunity and put past the keepers right hand side.

We unfortunately witnessed a severe injury to Ryan Sweeney for Milngavie who we wish a speedy recovery. However, the injury did not stop the tremendous play of his side. A corner from Carmichael was flicked towards goal, with William Fleming on hand to slam it into the net and make sure of the goal.

Five minutes later and the best goal of the match was scored by Carmichael. On the right hand side of the box from around 25 yards the midfielder curled his effort towards the goal. The goalkeeper had no chance of making a save and Milngavie found themselves 4-0 to the good.

Milngavie were not done there and neither was Slee. He cut in from the left side beating two Oban players on route. Then from the edge of the box he slipped past the final player and confidently finished off into the bottom right hand corner.

Half Time: Milngavie Wanderers 5-0 Oban Saints

The second half was a quitter affair overall but that was partly thanks to the Oban Saints goalkeeper, Mateusz Polewaczyk. He denied Fleming after some good link up play between Kyle Campbell and Alberto Vezza and then also made a confident save from a well struck free-kick by Jonathan Grier.

Oban themselves also had an opportunity when the ball was played back on the edge of the box. Liam Higgins connected well with the shot but the accuracy did not match the power and the attempt went wide of the left post.

It looked as if the game would finish with the half-time scoreline, but Fleming had other ideas. He received the ball 40 yards from goal and advanced towards goal. He beat the tracking player for pace and from edge of the box blasted his shot into the top corner with his left foot.

Three great goals and a fantastic overall performance from the Glasgow league champions sets them up perfectly ahead of their second group game, while Oban will be hoping this would be the only slip-up.
