Kilbride headed into today’s game after looking to add a trophy to a strong season where they had finished second in their league. However, league form went out the window as Caledonian who finished 6th in the same league won the match albeit in the lottery of penalties.
Kilbride had the better of a poor first half where only a few chances were created. Tony Pickering was played in down the left wing as Kilbride broke quickly. The wide man got into the box and struck a fierce shot which was well held by Caledonian’s keeper.
The Kilwinning side came close again soon after their first effort. A corner on their right wing was taken quickly with Jordan Muir receiving the ball. He crossed the ball in from the edge of the area with nobody able to connect to the ball but it was heading and did not end up in the net thanks to a brilliant save from the goalkeeper.
Caledonian’s first attack of note in the half was a really good one which was not taken. A free kick was played into the Kilbride box from the half way line. Two attackers broke the offside trap and could have taken on the cross, one went for the ball and the other moved square looking for the knock down. The player going for the ball had time and space to play in his team mate or take the ball down but did not know he did and wasted the opportunity by heading the shot wide.
After their first scare of the half Kilbride went straight back on the front foot. William Dunlop brought the ball out of midfield with a powerful run, he then passed the ball to Jordan Muir on the edge of the area. Muir then squared the ball to Robbie McInnes who struck a powerful shot towards goal which was well saved by the keeper.
The final attack of the half fell to Kilbride and it came from a corner. Colin Latmour took the kick from the left hand side, the ball was not cleared fully and it came out to Matthew Rose who shot at goal. His shot was deflected off his own team mate in the opposite direction across goal and finished just wide of the goal with the keeper rooted to the spot.
At half time the score was 0–0. The game was fairly even with Kilbride slightly edging it with more chances created.

The second half was played in the same vein as the first with very few chances created for either side.
Caledonian had the first chance of the half with their striker creating a chance for himself with strong play. He kept the ball while under pressure from Kilbride defenders and got into the area. The striker got a shot away from an angle which was well saved by the keeper.
The same man had another chance shortly after. A free kick was played in from deep and flicked towards the back post. The attacker got round the back and was free when the ball fell to him. He controlled the ball well and fired a shot at goal which forced a brilliant save from the keeper from close range.
Kilbride finished the brighter of the two sides and forced a couple of chances which could have won them the game. Tony Pickering drive down the left wing and got to the by-line. He crossed the ball towards the 6 yard line where Liam McAdam looked to meet the cross but could not get a strong enough contact on the ball to send it goalwards and the ball was then cleared.
The final attack of the game came from a Kilbride corner. Jordan Muir took the kick from the left hand side. Roy Kerr won the header on the 6 yard line and saw his header crash off the bar and out for a goal kick.

Caledonian’s second penalty was saved well by Kilbride’s William Dobbin who dived across to his right to keep the shot out. Kilbride were able to capitalise on that miss by scoring their second kick. Caledonian scored their third penalty, drawing the sides level. Kilbride’s third penalty was missed – the shot was smashed towards goal but crashed off the bar and back out. Caledonian had the chance to go ahead in the shootout with their next kick was well dispatched to heap the pressure on Kilbride. Kilbride’s fourth penalty was saved meaning that Caledonian had the chance to win the match with their next penalty. They did, and walked away from Dam Park holding the trophy.
