Musselburgh Windsor vs Spartans FC RedsThe third, and final, game at Pinkie St Peter’s on Saturday was an under-19 league fixture between Musselburgh Windsor and Spartans Reds. The home side won 2-0 and both goals were scored by No 17, Ewan Ralton.

It was the day, also, when the very confident Windsor No 8, Daniel Moffat, celebrated his 17th birthday and in keeping with this pleasant, outgoing attitude, Daniel said: “I will score three goals today and your headline could be ‘Birthday Boy Scores Hat-trick'!”

Danny boy gave a mature display for Windsor but when it came to scoring goals, it was a ‘manure’ display on his part. I do not know what Daniel had for lunch but after missing several good chances to put the ball in the back of the Spartans net, he was well and truly in the land of make-believe if he thought he would score three goals. He also got an unwelcome ‘birthday card’ from excellent referee, Kevin Ferguson. It was coloured yellow and with Daniel appearing to strike up a rapport with the match official during which many words were exchanged, it could have ended with a red card! “Make my day,” I muttered as I watched from the sidlines.

However, Danny boy was allowed to stay on the pitch and possibly he impressed new coach Nicky Combe in the process - AS A BIT OF A COMEDIAN! Maybe Daniel has a future as a stand-up comedian at the Festival Fringe. This was a hard-earned win for Windsor and they showed - once again - that when they get in front, they just cannot ‘kill off’ the opposition.

Musselburgh Windsor vs Spartans FC RedsThere was never any chance of Spartans getting a real hammering as the players in the famous Spartans colours put in very good performance. They were denied on several occasions by another Daniel in the home goal. His last name is Laing! Like the amateur goalkeeper for Musselburgh in the game that preceded the under-19 fixture in the South East Region Youth FA, Laing was in incredible form. No, to hell, he was sensational and the saves he brought off to deny Spartans, particularly in the second half, were out of this world if I may say so!

Ewan Ralton scored both his well-taken goals in the first half and as far as goals were concerned, that was our lot! There were several moments of light entertainment in a cracking second half as Daniel Laing demonstrated his inability to score goals from good positions. He is a big young man so he was up in the Spartans goalmouth to win headers - misdirected ones at that.

I must confess I was hoping Spartans would score and set up a humdinger of a game. Daniel the Magnificent (goalkeeper) it was who stopped that happening. Calvin Muttitt even hit a shot from close range on to Windsor’s left-hand post. It was great to watch as Spartans pulled out all the stops to make the breakthrough, but Windsor have a very strong defence (Daniel Moffat and all) and they somehow survived the storm as it were.

And the referee who Daniel Moffat shared his birthday with - the excellent Kevin Ferguson.

And finally, to Daniel Moffat, I hope you had a wonderful birthday and, let me know, but was that your Porsche parked in the car park at Pinkie St Peter’s? I have to admit, Daniel had an excellent game!
